348 Repairs in 51 Days. Thank You!

Thank you from Hometown Bicycles!I’ll admit, I was a little apprehensive when we made the decision to start Hometown Bicycles. Who isn’t when it comes to launching their own business?

For that reason, I am very thankful for the people that have made this shop a growing success. 348 repairs later, I am still amazed by the support I have received from the local community, my friends and family.

I am also grateful for the encouragement that fellow local bike shops have offered – shops like Cycletherapy in Waterford and Ann Arbor’s Wheels in Motion.

“But,” you’re wondering, “aren’t they competition?”

Actually, no. I’ve known these shops for years, as well as the people who work there, and I have great respect for their passion to put people on bicycles.

Competition isn’t another bicycle shop. It’s a Play-station, it’s a Quad-runner… it’s something that doesn’t give back to you like a bicycle does.

Like Hometown Bicycles, these shops want you to have a good time; they want you to have a great experience; they want you to receive the best service they can offer. And ultimately our common goal is the same: We all want you to RIDE YOUR BIKE!

So thank you, all of you, for the enthusiastic welcome to the cycling community. We look forward to fueling your cycling passion for a long time to come!

Should my bike get a tune-up?

Should my bike get a tune-up?
This question has, not surprisingly, been asked frequently over these past couple weeks. And our answer?… NO.

Now you’re thinking, “What do you mean ‘NO’?” Well, if your bike spends more time parked in your garage than your car then, NO, you don’t need a tune up – you need to sell it!

But if you ride – or intend to ride – your bike, then that’s an entirely different story.

What is a Tune Up?
Excellent question: A tune up falls into the same category as a dental cleaning, an oil change, or even clearing out your house gutters; it’s preventative maintenance. A tune-up is the action you take to either offset costs in the long run, or to give yourself more time between the inevitable…  a REPAIR.

What is a Repair?
According to Dictionary.com, it is a Verb (used with object) meaning To restore to a good or sound condition after decay or damage; mend: to repair a motor. A repair, then, is a root canal, a motor swap or a new roof. Every bicycle needs a repair at some point or another.

The frequency with which you tune up your bicycle, by the way, often gives you a good timeline of when the eventual repair may need to happen. More tune-ups equals less repairs, and vice-versa.

So, back to the original question: “Should my bike get a tune up?”
YES. If you want to enjoy your bicycle, and put your energy into climbing “Mount Kensingtonjaro” instead of troubleshooting a bike breakdown, then get your bicycle tuned up regularly!

Make your bicycle maintenance my problem, not yours. That’s why we’re here… to get you back to “your happy place” on a working bicycle!

May 8th Bike Demo. Try it.. Then buy it.. I will Fix it…

It’s been much anticipated, and now it’s here: The Island Lake Bike Demo is back! Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 8, 2010. It’s the biggest bike demo in Michigan. Located at the Dodge Brothers parking lot (the very west end parking lot after the train tracks), it is a free event for all. However, pre-registration and a State Park pass are required. I will be there from 10am to 12pm if you need an unbiased opinion on your favorite bicycles.

P.S. Sunday is Mother’s Day!

From the website:

Registration is now open. Click Here to visit the new outdoorathlete.com website. The event is free, but if you pre-register it will save you and us time and get you onto the bikes asap.

Update: A Lights & Motion sponsored Night Ride/Demo will be held at Island Lake Recreation Area on Friday, May 7, 2010 at 7:00 PM. Meet in the Dodge Parking Lot (the same lot as the Demo on Saturday). The event will raise money for Michigan Youth Cycling. There will be many Light & Motion Lights available to test for a dollar donation to Michigan Youth Cycling. Contact Jeff Buerman at theqsportsgroup@gmail.com or 734-564-7395 for more information.

Spring is just around the corner, and that can only mean one thing. It is time to get ready for the Island Lake Spring Bike Demo. Confirmed demo rigs by all of the usual suspects like Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, Giant and new for this year Felt. Also all of Michigan’s best bike retailers will be in attendance, plus a couple new entries from other outdoor sports. So you can find the bike and gear you want and find the best shop for you to buy it from.

There will also be a few new twists this year such as the Trail’s Edge campout and Light in Motion night ride.
Registration will open soon so make sure to sign up to avoid the lines and eliminate any delay to demoing the bike of your dreams.

Hours for Everyone

Hometown Bicycles is open 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week… what do you think?

We know for a fact that there are a lot of cyclists who tote their bikes to work, so they can drop it off for repair on their lunch break, then get stuck in a line at the shop and blow their entire hour, only to find out their bike won’t be ready for another two weeks. We’ve been there… it happens.

And that’s why we picked the hours we did.

Our goal is for you to drop it off before work and, in most cases, pick it up right after and ride. The cycling season’s too short and too darn fun to waste!

So our question for you is…
