GRETCHEN’S GREAT BIKE ADVENTURE
Customer Highlight: A bike restoration & ride across Ontario
Gretchen Klatt at Hometown Bicycles after her cycling adventure!

Talk about living the dream! Customer Gretchen Klatt came to our shop last winter with an old, steel frame bike and a hankering for pedal-powered adventure. Here’s her story, in her own words…

“I had a 21 year old steel bike hiding in my garage; as a winter project Hometown Bicycles helped me restore her with new components into a touring bike. I talked all summer about taking it out camping and when September rolled around it was now or never.  I bought maps from Adventure Cycling and my sweet husband drove me to Sarnia, Ontario and waved good-bye.

For six days I peddled and camped (ok, one night I stayed in a cute little inn!) and learned a lot.  Wind isn’t as bad as I thought, a loaded bike is really heavy, I can be more aggressive on the road, looking behind is critical to my safety, Gatorade is important, 50 degrees is not too cold to ride, I got better at hills (big hills) and I love my quads!

I thought I could travel 70 miles a day – I was wrong.  I averaged 50 miles a day and by 2:00 I wanted to be done for the day.  I left part of my trip unfinished because I ran out of vacation time; but that’s ok, Ontario will be there when I get a yen to ride another section of that map – and ride it I will.”

ISLAND LAKE’S TRAIL SYSTEM IS GROWING!
Community Highlight: Friends of Island Lake take action

September 23, 2014 Friends of Island Lake meeting at the Park Office
Last night’s Friends of Island Lake meeting, regarding both paved and single track trail additions, had an incredible turn-out. The park office was literally overflowing… you can only see a few of the attendees in the picture above.

We were super proud to see Hometownies there in abundance. Way to support the trails you love to ride!

On the agenda were extremely exciting trail developments throughout the park which, by the way, is ranked Michigan’s highest attendance non-camping recreational area. To read more about the Friends of Island Lake’s projects, check out the three links below:

Community Highlight: Tour de Livingston Ride in Local News

Despite threatening weather, last Sunday’s Hometown Bicycles Tour de Livingston Training Ride out of Howell had great attendance from fans of the much-loved, nearly-here Tour de Livingston event. Keep a weather eye out for ride photos taken by renowned local photographer, Richard Lim, in an upcoming Livingston Daily Press & Argus!

A HOMETOWN SUPERSTAR:
Meet Ray Dangelmaier

Most of you know Ray as the “smiley, little guy” on Hometown’s sales floor… and as a blur on the mountain bike race scene. He’s a perennial, customer favorite – radiating Texas-sized personality and crazy-awesome bike smarts.

Now Ray’s given us another reason to bust our vest with pride, being selected as Michigan’s Jamis Grassroots Rider. That’s a giant leap toward Ray’s dream of becoming a Jamis Pro Team Rider.

We asked Ray a few questions about how he got into cycling and how he feels about Jamis and the sport:

Q) Who inspired you to ride a bicycle?

A) There wasn’t any particular person that inspired Ray to ride. He started riding trails with his friends to beat summer boredom, and wound up falling in love with cycling in the woods. Mountain biking became his ultimate get-away.

“When I’m riding, there’s no stress, no “clean your room,” no obligations – it really gets me to my ‘happy place.’”

Q) What made you want to ride a bicycle professionally?

A) “I don’t consider riding my bike a profession; I just enjoy it. I’m stoked every day to go ride my bike… not to win money or anything – just to see how far I can push myself, and how hard I can push the competition.”

Q) Where did you take your first podium?

A) Ray’s first podium was a win at the Pontiac Lake Time Trial in 2012 – the same year that he graduated from high school and first started mountain biking. A good friend, CJ Brish, had taken him under his wing, and helped Ray break into the competitive field.

At this particular event, CJ challenged him to move up into Expert, so that they wouldn’t have to wait for the 1:00pm Beginner division start time. Ray rocked the course, and won his first Expert race with a whopping 12 minute lead.

That’s when he knew he wanted to pursue racing.

Q) When you took your first podium, how did you feel?

A) “Amazed. I was blown away that, in the little bit of time I’d been riding, I could progress as much as I did. It made me realize that cycling is my passion.”

At that point, Ray dropped all other sports – including over ___ years of hockey – to focus his full energy on cycling.

Q) Why do you want to race for the Jamis family?

A) “The whole company is, in my eyes, the most amazing group of people. We share the same goals and views. Jamis does whatever they can to get you on a bike. They just want to get people riding and into the sport.”

Ray was also wowed by a personal email from Jamis’ CEO, Carine Joannou.

“I mean, what other president of an international company would email a small grassroots cyclist, like me? I also met Jamis’ factory pro rider, Erica Tingey, and she made a point of connecting with me on Facebook. It’s like having a second family.”

We’re proud of you, Ray!

A Hometown Heart-to-Heart

Hometown Bicycles: Always having fun

Dawn Bhajan resting after a hard day's renovationTHREE YEARS AGO, we launched Hometown Bicycles – not just a store, but a concept. And now it’s time to check in on how we’re doing.

We believe in the sport of cycling down to our very core, so we never wanted to be just another bike retailer – they’re a dime a dozen. Our goal was and is to be the people’s bike shop – a place you visit because you genuinely love being here.

Hometown Bicycles open signAnd some wonderful things have occurred as a result! We got engaged, and then married. A year later, our shop quadrupled in size, and we introduced retail. And a year after that, we got a fish tank (icing on the cake).

BUT THE FUN DIDN’T STOP THERE. We won Best Bike Shop in Southeast Michigan thanks to you, our loyal customers. Then one of the world’s largest bicycle parts distributors, QBP, honored us with the Best Retailer Award. Our shop was recently featured in the Early Hometown Shop RidesLivingston Daily Press & Argus. Organizations of every kind have invited us to participate in their events.

And you’ve given us the greatest reward of all – the opportunity to repair well over 5,000 of your treasured bicycles, so that we could get you back in the saddle and loving your ride.

Hometown pumpkin carving party

ALONG THE WAY, we’ve championed the many, many people who ride because they WANT to, not because they HAVE to. In return, you’ve given us purpose and joy:

•  Tom and Sarah Spangler, who make regular weekend field trips to Hometown just to say “hi”
•  Gary Batherson, who shares his trials and triumphs with Hometown in a way that humbles and enriches us
Lily - A true Hometown shop dog•  Kenny Johnson, a true blue Hometownie, who reliably spends his lunch (… and breakfast… and dinner) hours at our store
•  Don Wood (a.k.a Woody), who in the midst of riding the Ididerot, sent us a photo of our Hometown sticker in Alaska ‘cuz he was thinking about us
•  Megan Holt, who brings us delicious, home-baked cookies with waist-enlarging frequency
Hometown host the Cub Scouts•  Mike Shaw, who revs us up about our shop every time he makes the haul from Livonia because he truly believes in Hometown

These kinds of relationships are the core of our culture, and we appreciate every last one.

WITH THE RISE OF OUR SUCCESS, there’s been a similar rise in customer volume. And though we give our all, sometimes we’re concerned that the true Hometown experience gets lost in the rush of the day. The Hometown Crew goes mountain bikingSo, we all sit back after closing time, and talk about the customers who came in, and whether we made an actual connection.

Our number one fear is becoming “just another bike shop.” We want to always stay connected with you, the people who believe in us.

Hometown's colorful selection of Jamis bikes

TO SUPPORT THAT GOAL, we do cool things, like run daily shop rides, feature customers and their accomplishments on Facebook, and work hard to make this your “happy place.” In addition, we’ll be launching a new, family-friendly, mountain bike race series this fall (stay tuned). Also, don’t be surprised if you get a call from us asking how you like your bike socks, or how you’re recent tune-up is working out; we care about your experience, and genuinely want to know!

Team Hometown BicyclesExpect more events, more communication, and more activities in the coming days. And, if you’re feelin’ it, we would love for you to share your own Hometown experience with us. Include a photo. Show us you’re riding and loving it! We’ll feature your stories in our emails, on our website, and on Facebook.

Thanks so much for always fueling our enthusiasm!

Shaun & Dawn Bhajan
