Pilates for Cyclists: 6 Week Series

Begins NEXT WEEK, Wednesday 8/18 from 9:30-10:30 AM

Whether you’re trying to get a “pedal up” on the competition or trying to find a way to ride longer and more comfortably, Pilates is an excellent exercise for cyclists!

Most of us have heard that we should strengthen our core. But what exactly does that mean? This class takes you beyond sit-ups — which, while a great exercise, really do not strengthen your core. Your core includes your whole torso, front and back, and Pilates helps you integrate that core strength to your limbs.

If you’re looking for arm and shoulder endurance, increased respiratory efficiency, and to improve your lower back flexibility and stability, this would be a great series to attend!

Taught by Jen Landells:
My movement background began at an early age as a dancer. I went to Western Michigan University where I was introduced to Pilates in the dance department. After discovering kinesiology and movement science, I changed paths and earned my degree in Exercise Science. After graduation, I found the perfect way to combine the two passions by completing my full Level 2 certification in STOTT PILATES.

After many years of teaching in Michigan and northern Florida, I decided to take my teaching career to the next level and become part of Balanced Body’s team of faculty trainers in 2011.

Then, in 2012, I completed the requirements to earn my post-rehabilitation conditioning specialist certification from STOTT PILATES.

I have worked with all levels of clients from beginners and post-rehabilitation to Olympic hopeful figure skaters, professional dancers, and NFL football players. I love the challenge of working with a wide range of fitness levels and abilities. It is so exciting to be able to help someone reach their goals. Either after surgery or an injury, in competition, or just to simply feel stronger and more balanced in daily life.

Personal Protection for Women: Monday 9/20 at 7 PM

Taught by Keep and Bear, LLC, this female-only course covers multiple facets of protection including situational awareness, instinctual responses, and nonphysical applications to preclude an encounter where protection is required.

From there, physical force applications are instructed including striking, force multipliers (hand weapons), and using them to assist in strikes and escapes from common grabs and other grapples.

These applications are intended to result in escape from a controlling engagement so the defender can reassess the situation and act to prevent harm (usually by escaping, neutralizing with physical force, or creating the time and distance necessary to bring lethal force options to bear).

Course Details:

  • An Introduction Packet will be sent to you upon registration.
  • This course is 1.5 hours long.
  • This course is moderately physically demanding. You will not be asked to push harder than you are able.
  • This course includes mild stress induction.
  • Live blades and weapons are not permitted in the training area.
  • Trainees will be expected to sign a waiver to partake in class.
  • There will be a short break at the 1/2 point of class.

Trainee Considerations:

  • This course is for females only, age 12+.
  • Non-adult trainees must be accompanied by an adult.
  • PREREQUISITE: None.

Goodbye to a Good Friend

It is with great sadness that we are sharing the loss of a great friend and fellow cyclist.

Phil Shaw passed away on Monday, July 26th at age 50. Phil came in as a customer and quickly became one of Hometown Bicycles’ biggest fans. He always brought high energy and positive vibes when he visited the shop. He loved riding his bike and sharing his adventures. Most recently, Phil was one of our guest speakers for “Hometown Storytellers”, where he shared his adventures crossing the Andes mountains from Chile to Argentina.

Phil frequently brought his toddlers into the shop to play with Liam and Aria because they “loved the bike shop with the playground”.

We will miss you Phil, and send your wife, Ann, and your kids and family our deepest condolences.

Shaun, Dawn, and your Hometown Family

There will be a Memorial Gathering on Wednesday, August 4th from 12-3 PM and a Memorial Service at 3 PM at Keehn-Griffin Funeral Home (706 W Main Street, Brighton). Phil’s Obituary can be found here.

Hometown Wins BEST BIKE SHOP!

THANK YOU

It is with the greatest appreciation that we thank you for voting us “Best Bike Shop in Southeast Michigan” again for 2021. We are going through one of the toughest times in modern history, and we have been challenged beyond belief; it feels good to know that you have our back!

2020 and 2021 have not been benchmark years for Hometown by any means. We know that we have made a lot of mistakes and have drifted a little from what makes us “Hometown”. This is the first year in our history that we have had a service lead time of more than a week. Staffing has been an issue, and with supply chain issues, it has been a struggle getting even some of the basic essentials for running a bike shop. I am sure you have heard the same story from every small business everywhere, but at the end of the day, we know that you still believe in Hometown and our mission, and this award proves it.

GREAT CHANGES MADE AND MORE TO COME
We have been working on some exciting changes for the shop that we would like to share with you to help us turn these past couple of years on their head and give you the most amazing Hometown experience to date.

  1. We have revamped our service shop to be more efficient and are proud to announce that, as of today 7/24/21, we are currently SAME DAY on repairs, NEXT DAY on new bike builds, and 3 DAYS on tune-ups (pending parts, of course).
  2. Although the shop is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, we have been working 7 days a week on bikes to stay on track.
  3. We have implemented a new texting service to increase our communication and give you better status updates on your bike.
  4. We have helped people find and assemble close to 50 new bikes that were purchased online and delivered to our shop. Our goal has always been and will always be to “GET YOU ON A BIKE”.
  5. In 2020 and 2021, we worked and are still working closely with local municipalities, the Road Commission, and our State Parks to give you more places to ride safely.
  6. We are formally introducing “The H.U.B Incubator”, a small business start-up space within the Hometown Bicycles building, to help up-and-coming Entrepreneurs.
