The 500 Mile Hometown Challenge

Accepting The 500 Mile Hometown Challenge

You just never know what sort of adventure awaits you at Hometown Bicycles… as recently discovered by Jill and Steven Gautherat of Hartland.

While picking up their two new Jamis Explorer comfort bikes, we issued Jill and Steven a challenge: 500 miles of cycling by the end of the summer. And what’s more, we asked them to chronicle the journey!

To their credit, Jill and Steven took to the idea like – well, like cyclists to saddles – and enthusiastically signed on for the adventure.

We’ll be tracking their pedal-powered mileage over the course of the summer on both our Facebook page and website.

Jill and Steven will also be joining us for weekly shop rides, and you are invited to ride along with these Hometown rock stars to encourage them on their way to 500 miles!

The Start of Something Spectacular: Jill and Steven’s First Blog

Hey Everyone! Jill and Steven Gautherat here, and we will be blogging our adventures of biking 500 miles! Shaun asked us to blog about our summer adventures on a bike so here it goes!

Who are we?

Steven and Jill Gautherat, we are husband and wife who have been married 11 years and love an adventure! We are living in Hartland, and both work in Brighton. I (Jill) work retail, so crazy hours for me, and Steven is a truck driver for a local company, so long hours for him! On the days we actually have off together, we love to go for walks, bike rides, and just enjoys our beautiful state of Michigan. With over 150 bike trails in Michigan, there are plenty of opportunities to ride 500 miles! Look for our posts soon, and see you on the trails!

Ride the tour with Hometown

Are you doing the 2011 Tour de Cure on Saturday June 11th? You should consider riding with us. To sign up visit our page.  The Tour de Cure is a fun 10,25,62, and 100 mile road ride around Livingston and surrounding counties. We will be there as sag support and all around  fun-makers.

Happy 1st Birthday Bill. Keep riding

On Wednesday, April 7th 2010, Hometown customer Bill Saint-Onge made a remarkable commitment. He committed to himself, his family and his life to ditch the car and ride a bicycle.

Thousands of miles, 2 bicycles and 3 winter spills (ouch!) later, he’s still going strong.

Bill isn’t greeted with the typical “Welcome to Hometown” when he stops by the shop. Instead, we throw him a “Hi, Bill. Where are you riding to now?”

And it’s not uncommon to get a response of “Traverse City!”, or some similarly distant location.

You may be wondering, did Bill break down and drive a car at any time over the last year?

NO. In worst case scenarios, he was driven where he needed to go.

Bill admits that he is nervous about taking the next step. And what step is that?

Completely getting rid of the car. Between you and me, I think he will do it!

You see, Bill isn’t just an inspiration to all of us at Hometown Bicycles. He represents what our shop is all about – committment, personal growth, courage, passion and cycling.

You’re most likely to spot Bill riding along Grand River between the East and West side of town, with more flashers on his bike than a fire engine.

Do us a favor. When you see Bill cycling through town on his trusty, orange steed, give him a wave and a thumbs up. His is a lifestyle choice we are proud to support!

A New Standard in Bicycle Tune-Ups: The Way It Should Be

Setting a new standard in Tune-ups
It’s been stewing all winter in dirty parts and cables blown from the 2010 riding season. Now you just had the worst first ride of the year ever because your bike’s performance – let’s face it – stank. The remedy? A tune-up, and not just any old tune-up either. Your bike is hankering for The Hometown Tune-up Treatment.

Setting the new standard in a standard tune-up

The Hometown Way“Lead, Follow, or Get Out of The Way,” declared Chrysler’s Lee Iacocca.

Lee, you said it right and, at Hometown, we’re listening. We began leading the industry last year as Michigan’s only 7am-7pm, 7-days-a-week bike shop. No bank hours for us. We want you to drop your bike off before work, pick it up after, and then RIDE.

But hang onto your bike shorts… our next leadership step is revolutionizing the “standard” tune-up.

What does that mean?
This means that at Hometown, you’re going to get a Standard Tune-up not offered by any other bike shop in the state of Michigan, possibly even the country. Check out any other bike shop. We are THAT confident that their Standard Tune-up won’t hold a candle to Hometown’s.

What is The Hometown Standard Tune-up?
First of all, THERE IS NO FINE PRINT!

Hometown is the one and only bicycle repair shop that’s OPEN 7AM to 7PM, 7 DAYS A WEEK.

Bikes dropped off before 10am can be picked up that night, and bikes dropped off after 3pm will be ready the next day. If your bike needs a part, we’ll still have it ready for you in just 48 hours.

WE FIX EVERYTHING. You won’t find bike snobbery here.

The new standard – The Hometown Standard – includes:

1. INSPECTION: We start by looking at the condition of your bike components to determine their wear. It’s important to us that we always send you out on a safe bicycle.

2. REMOVAL: Front and rear derailleur, Cassette, Chain, Crank, Wheels, All cables and housing, and Handlebar tape on road bikes

3. CLEANING: Frame, Derailleurs, Cassette, Chain, Crank, and Wheels

4. CALIBRATION: True wheels, Align frame dropout

5. RE-INSTALLATION: Derailleurs, Cassette, Chain, Crank, and Wheels

6. REPLACEMENT: All Cables and Housing will be replaced with new, stainless steel inner wire and 5mm housing PLUS all road bike Handlebar tape will be replaced with your choice of 5 Profile Design cork bar tape. Premium Handlebar tape is available for an additional cost.

7. LUBE/GREASE: Keeping your bike’s components running smoothly with the appropriate products

8. ADJUSTMENT: Front and rear derailleur, Brakes, Headset, Tighten all nuts and bolts

9. RIDE: PICK UP YOUR BIKE & RIDE!

10. FOLLOW UP: We stand behind our work, and offer a 30-day follow-up adjustment free of charge

The Cost
Mountain Bike & Everything Else: $60. Road Bike: $65.

The point?
We want to to be your number one bicycle resource, so we’re turning “Standard” into a new level of “awesome”.

Stop in and experience a new standard – the way it SHOULD be.

See you soon!
