Michigan’s cycling season kicks off the year with the Killer Gravel Road Race – The third annual Barry-Roubaix! The Barry-Roubaix has grown by over 250 percent in two years making it the third largest cycling race in Michigan. The 2011 race will most likely exceed 1000 racers! Like the classic it’s named after, Barry-Roubaix will test riders against rolling gravel roads (80%), pavement, one mile of rough two-track, rocks, sand, mud, and possibly snow and ice, along with 2200 feet of climbing over its 35 mile loop.

  • A classic road/off road race featuring a variety of terrain and surfaces to test all your cycling skills. Cyclocross, Mountain, Road, Single-Speeds, Fixies and Tandems are all welcome.
  • Road, mountain or cross bikes allowed in any category. Choose from a 23, 35 or 65 mile race distance. No racing license required.
  • The course will not be closed to traffic and does not have a rolling escort. Rules of the road apply, stop at all stop signs, yield to cars, no more than 2 riders abreast and do not cross the yellow centerline. Violations will be penalized by disqualification.

Where is Barry-Roubaix?

  • Barry County, Middleville, Michigan – Start/finish:Yankee Springs Recreation Area – Gun Lake Unit
  • All vehicles entering the Gun Lake Unit will need a Michigan State Park motor vehicle passport

Meet Mr. 1,000, Hot Sauce & 2,011 Bikes

Shaun Says: Cleared for Take-Off

Shaun Says...Hometown Bicycles is just a month and a half away from launching the shop you’ve all been waiting for… the shop that you all deserve.

We’ll be bringing in bikes soon, in tandem with your favorite cycling gear and equipment. Our empty retail shop won’t be empty much longer!

Service Rules!
No, really. Remarkable service – for customers AND bicycles – really does rule at Hometown. Whether on the retail or repair side of our shop, expect the same high service standards we set during 2010.

A Happy Ending Starts a New Beginning
Remember our “1,000 or Bust” challenge – calling on riders to help us make 1,000 repairs in our first year of business? By the time December 31st rolled around, we were rockin’ 1,012 repairs in the shop. We’ve said it before, but it’s worth saying again… you’re amazing!! Thanks for making it happen!
And our goal for 2011? 2,011 repairs. We’ve already got 10 down. 2,001 chances left to be a part of our success story!

Hometown’s Bike Trainer Tips
Trainer Tips from Hometown
Winter doldrums? Of course not, because you’ve been cranking out the mileage on your bike trainer, and are riding strong! While you’re keeping your mind sharp and your legs tight, here are a few Hometown tips to help your indoor ride:

Use Your Gears
Although trainers offer built-in resistance, remember to shift gears frequently. Whether you’re riding the roads or the trainer, the constant spin of the chain wears away your chainring teeth. Shifting regularly helps the gears wear evenly.

Stretch
Cyclists are notorious for the 2-second leg stretch. Not good. There’s no point getting ripped cycling muscles, if you waddle like a duck off the bike. Stretching is critical to safe and effective riding. Try these stellar cycling stretches from Bicycling Magazine.

Crank the TV
Let’s face it. Indoor cycling lacks the thrill of open-air riding. So, if you’re having a hard time staying motivated to ride, park your bike and trainer in front of the TV. You’ll be surprised at how quickly time zips by when you’re waiting breathlessly to see if Michelle marries Mark, or dumps him for the cable guy.

A Hometown Congrats to Trail’s Edge!
Howdy, Neighbor! Trail's Edge opens in Milford
A bike company whose standards and philosophy match our own, we’re proud to congratulate Trail’s Edge Cyclery on the recent opening of their Milford branch.

“If you are familiar with Trail’s Edge Cyclery in Plymouth, you know that they are different from the typical bike shop. The new Milford location is an expansion of the original store concept that focuses on helping people get out and enjoy cycling. Trail’s Edge stores are owned and operated by cyclist & bike geeks, who enjoy and understand the need for a strong local cycling community.”
~Mike Flack, owner

The Countdown to 1,000 CONTINUES!

The days are disappearing. Time is flying by. Word is getting out. And our repair count keeps climbing.

Repair 934…              Repair 939…              Repair 945…              Repair 957….

We know we can do this. We know we can complete 1,000 repairs by the end of this year – Hometown’s first year. We know we can do it because you, our customers, have been stepping up to the plate.

This isn’t about business anymore. It’s about achieving something. It’s about conquering a mountain and staking our flag at the summit. It’s about proving that “unlikely” doesn’t mean “impossible”…

IT’S ABOUT A NUMBER. REPAIR #1000.

We're getting closer! We’ve completed 943 Repairs, Repair 957 is in the store now, and Repair 948 is on the stand. You can follow the count on our Facebook Page.

For everyone who has brought in a bike, thank you. You became a part of something bigger – something that will go down in Hometown history – the minute you walked through our door.

For those who want to participate, here’s the deal. The next 42 tune-up/repairs that are brought in before December 31st will get a Complete Overhaul (new cables, new housing, new bar tape and cleaned and degreased to within an inch of its life), a 25% Off Any Product Coupon (special orders included) and an honorary place on our Facebook Wall of Fame. And you’ll get all of this for $40. No joke. So our question is…

Will YOU be one of the THOUSAND?

Hometown Bicycles Party Update
Our party plans have changed! By popular request, we’re moving our Hometown celebration to Thursday, December 30th, 5-10pm.

We polled our customers as they brought in more repairs (right on, bike peeps!), and the universal answer was “move the party between Christmas and New Years!” So that’s what we’re doing. And by the 30th, we hope we’ll have something else besides a wedding and a shop opening to celebrate… 1,000 or bust, baby!

There’ll be food, music, seats and great company. You don’t need to bring a thing besides yourself. If you can make it, please CLICK HERE TO RSVP.

we’re trying to accomplish something.” -Thomas Edison

Hours for Everyone

Hometown Bicycles is open 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week… what do you think?

We know for a fact that there are a lot of cyclists who tote their bikes to work, so they can drop it off for repair on their lunch break, then get stuck in a line at the shop and blow their entire hour, only to find out their bike won’t be ready for another two weeks. We’ve been there… it happens.

And that’s why we picked the hours we did.

Our goal is for you to drop it off before work and, in most cases, pick it up right after and ride. The cycling season’s too short and too darn fun to waste!

So our question for you is…
