Kiosks, shoes, dogs, and focus groups – just a typical day at Hometown!

Countdown to Tour de Livingston!
Sunday, October 6th
There are only THREE weeks until the 2019 Tour de Livingston! The excitement is building!

Tour de Livingston kiosk

As the major bike sponsor, Hometown is very invested in the success of this event! To make things convenient, we have set up a Tour de Livingston Kiosk in the shop for any and all of you to register for this scenic ride!

This fully supported ride includes hospitality tents, a full breakfast, snacks along the route, and a hearty meal prepared by the chef at Mt. Brighton.

All proceeds from this event help to: bridge the gap for local hardworking families struggling to meet their most basic needs; prepare every child to be ready for success; and build a healthy community for all residents via the Livingston County United Way Basic Needs Programs. Since its start in 2008, the Tour de Livingston has raised over $400,000 to address the community’s most critical needs. The Tour de Livingston is organized and run by the Howell Rotary Club.

Ignite the Spirit
Let’s help our friends at the Brighton Area Fire Authority!

On September 14, 2019, Ignite the Spirit will begin a week-long bicycle ride from Chicago to Toronto, averaging close to 80 miles of biking each day!  All proceeds will benefit the Ignite the Spirit Cancer Fund.

The Chicago Fire Department spearheads Ignite the Spirit. Because of the inherent dangers that firefighters and paramedics face on a daily basis, they are exposed to known and unknown carcinogens. While many of their Brothers and Sisters are surviving in remission and leading normal productive lives, the fact remains that this calling to serve has taken the lives of far too many First Responders. The Ignite the Spirit Fund was created with the idea of providing financial help when they are faced with battling cancer.

Ignite the Spirit

The cyclists will be hosted by the Brighton Area Fire Authority for dinner on September 16th, as they pass through Livingston County. If you would like to ride in and out of Brighton with these cycling warriors, contact the fire station at (810) 588-7845.

This is what community is all about!

It is quite an honor that Hometown’s own Shaun Bhajan has been invited to participate in the Pathways & Parks Focus Group as part of Brighton Township’s Master Plan Update. The purpose of the group is to discuss ways to better connect the community and enhance recreational opportunities, and we have so many ideas to share on this subject! Read more about the Master Plan HERE.

“Thank you Brighton Township for investing in our community. I am proud to be part of this group to look at infrastructure, business development and recreation in our area. They are embracing the core values of the township. I’m really excited for the good work that is being done for the direct benefit of the residents,” states Shaun.

Brighton Area Schools therapy dogs

In other community news, we are a drop-off site for the Brighton Area Schools fundraiser to support Brighton’s Pack of Therapy Dogs and less fortunate people around the world. Simply donate your gently used (or new) shoes, cleats, slippers and boots. Over 2800 pairs of shoes have been collected community-wide so far and there is still time to help!

Place shoes in a bag (with laces tied where applicable) and place in the collection bin near our front counter. Spread the word and help make a difference to the social-emotional learning dogs who make such a difference in our schools.

And in Team News…

The 13th Annual Maybury State Park Time Trial took place on Sunday, August 25th. Brought to you by the MCMBA, this year’s race was Maybury as you’ve never experienced it before — the course included some awesome race day-only singletrack. The mix of fast open sprints and tight, technical singletrack rewarded both cardio AND bike handling skills.

Maybury Time Trial

Team Hometown was represented by Co-Captains Mike Dyer and Joe Ostervik, Jacob Henriksen (pictured above left), Dan Tribble (pictured above right), Roger Pelkey and Andrew Showerman (and his two sons). Great job, everyone!

And because he’s just this amazing (and maybe a little bit c-r-a-z-y), Joe Ostervik did another race earlier that day! Two races in one day?! What?!

From Joe himself: “So I was a little crazy!! Did 2 races in the same day!! I was at the Debaets-Devos Race and got a flat in the 3rd lap. Swapped out the tire and got back in the race as they came by, but couldn’t get back up to speed and ended up last. Then I was able to make it to Maybury and missed the cutoff for the sport class. They let me do the beginner race, but technically I am a beginner in the race world because I only do one, maybe two, MTB races a year. Rode angry and got 1st in my age group which is OLD!!”

Approximately 70 cyclists showed their support, with many dedicating the ride to someone.

Hometownies Colin and Cindy Chisholm organize the event each year.

“I can tell you that the vibe was phenomenal,” says Colin. “Everyone was touched. So many people took me and Cindy aside to thank us and tell us their story, and they shared their story with others too.”

In recent weeks, we introduced you to two of our panelists, Jenny Schild with Body Within and Leslie Barrett of Zumba with Leslie Barrett. This week, meet our next panelist, Martha Soraruf who operates Cardio Drumming Hosted by PURE Fitness & Nutrition: Powered by Arbonne

We know many of you have seen (and heard!) the supercharged cardio drumming classes going on at Hometown! Over the past 3 years, Martha has been motivating students with her infectious energy.

Martha Soraruf

As an elementary school teacher, she never envisioned becoming a business owner — the shift occurred about 7 years ago when she became an Arbonne consultant — which led Martha to be able to enjoy teaching both kids AND fitness-focused adults!

Martha loved Arbonne products so much that she wanted to share them with everyone she knew. And then she attended a drumming class where a friend turned to her and said, “You should teach this.” The next week, she started practicing and, within a month, she held her first class in her friend’s basement.

“I haven’t looked back since. I get to combine the best of both worlds — Arbonne and cardio drumming,” shares Martha. “I love what I do — all of it. I provide a service but it serves me as well. I’ve become a person who takes risks and tries new things, for better or worse.”

Martha also does personal training and is a brand new Pound instructor. Meet this jack-of-many-trades next week… and be sure to bring your questions!

EFF Cancer Gravel Classic Ride

This is a FREE event! Let’s raise awareness and have a great time while doing so!

Bagels, Bikes & Brew was a resounding success!

Pro-Motion Physical Therapy

On Sunday, August 10th, Team Hometown Bicycles’ Title Sponsor, Vinnie Baylerian with Pro-Motion Physical Therapy, hosted an event to be remembered! It went so well that we’ll be planning a repeat for those who missed out!

Team Hometown Bicycles

Twenty cyclists arrived at Pro-Motion’s office for coffee and bagels, as well as a tour of the clinic, before heading off with Vinnie on a gravel/road ride and then wrapping things up with a cold beverage at Brewery Becker!

Many thanks to Hometownie, Jack Riddle, for being an integral part of planning the routes and an all-around great help!

Did you know Vinnie is a certified Level 2 Clinical BikeFit Pro?

Pro-Motion Physical Therapy

Bike fitting is designed to fit your bike to your unique body architecture to maximize power, efficiency, and comfort, as well as reduce the risk of injury. A bike fit at Pro-Motion Physical Therapy includes: pre-fit interview regarding your cycling goals, prior injuries, and areas of discomfort while riding; a body assessment, including strength, flexibility, and movement patterns on and off the bike; a multidimensional analysis of your body mechanics based on your continuous feedback and interface with your bike; an exercise program designed to improve deficiencies that present during your physical assessment; and a follow-up consultation.

In Team Hometown News…

Joe Ostervik

Check out that familiar face to the left — Team Hometown Co-Captain, Joe Ostervik, at the finish line for ODRAM (One Day Ride Across Michigan) on Saturday, August 10th. Not sure he could look any happier, and we are stoked for him!

This fundraiser benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Ride to Cure Program. 2019 marked the 10th year that JDRF has been the beneficary of ODRAM, with nearly $50 million raised for research to deliver life-changing therapies and, one day, a cure for Type 1 diabetes (T1D).

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect as approximately 500 cyclists rolled cross-state to cover 150 miles from Montague to Bay City. Congrats, Team!
