Jacob is the type of Team member who can make ANY cycling adventure FUN for all! This past weekend found him going arctic at 2019 Polar Roll:

“Going into the 2019 Polar Roll, we all knew it was going to be a tough ride. Along with recent storms, a fresh snowstorm hit the night before the race. Volunteers were out until 5 AM trying to get the trail ride-able. That being said, I am so glad that I have the mindset that any day that I’m outside and enjoying the fresh air and hanging out with friends is a good day, no matter if I make it to the finish line or not. I did not quit this race; however, I did not make it to the finish line either. I did, however, make it to my goal point!

I also made a new friend, and showed him the Hometown way of no rider left behind. I got to be out in the Beautiful UP. I took in some awesome scenery (wolves, deer, and a bald eagle). I got to take some awesome pictures, had friends and even a few strangers take care of me and my new friend while we are out on the course! The most important thing, though, is I had fun even during the hardest parts when we had to walk. That is ultimately what biking has always been for me! It is a time to hang out with my friends, be outdoors, and just have fun!”

Sponsor Feature: Beauchamp Water Treatment & Supply

Meet Sandy Rachwal!

Beauchamp Water Supply

How long have you collaborated with Hometown? How did you get involved?
Beauchamp has partnered with Hometown Bicycles for the past 3 years and loved every second of it! The family feel at the store and the awesome energy is everywhere when you walk through the door! Shaun and Dawn make you feel so welcome and right at home. It’s a great feeling to see everyone smiling and willing to help you get into the right bike. I had met a previous employee at an event and told her we would be willing to donate water for rides and clinics… the rest is history!

What are some of your favorite Livingston County events and festivals?
Livingston County has so much to offer and we love so many events here! I love the Kite Festival; the Howell Melon Fest is a lot of fun; Island Lake Demo Day with Hometown; Milford MemoriesLegend of Sleepy Howell;Fantasy of Lights… way too many to mention!

Tell us how Beauchamp is involved in the community.
We work with the Hartland, Howell, Brighton, South Lyon and Fenton schools, donating to their dances and runs. We partner with Meals on Wheels. We help Habitat for Humanity on builds occasionally, and donate and help at their picnic. We help with a lot of runs, such as The Melanoma Run, Run for Hunger, Alzheimer’s and Go Pink Runs. We are also members of seven different Chamber of Commerce chapters, from Hartland to The Lakes area.

How much water do YOU personally drink each day?
I start my morning with a 10 ounce bottle of water and try to drink another 6-8 bottles every day.

Beauchamp Water

What sets Beauchamp apart from its competitors?
Beauchamp Water Treatment was built on integrity. I always feel, no matter how educated, rich, or cool you believe you are, how you treat people ultimately tells all!

Coffee or tea?
My drink of choice is a cup of freshly brewed coffee with honey and coconut milk!

Young Women’s Entrepreneurship Event:

Tuesday, March 12th from 6:00-7:30 PM

We have introduced you to our keynote speaker, Jennifer Matras with Competitive Edge Skating… now we bring to you another fabulous female entrepreneur who will be part of our Q&A panel. Meet Samantha Brish!

Dr. Samantha Brish is a Brighton native. She graduated from Brighton High School in 2010 and went on to study Movement Science at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Sam leads a very active lifestyle. She is an avid marathon runner, weight lifter and triathlete. Chronic hip and back pain forced Dr. Sam to take a break from running in 2014, which is when she learned about chiropractic. After countless attempts at rest and traditional physical therapy, Dr. Sam had her first adjustment and knew chiropractic was what she was meant to do. Dr. Sam pursued her Doctor of Chiropractic and Masters in Sport Science & Rehabilitation degrees.

Samantha Brish

Upon graduation, Dr. Sam opened her own practice, Element Chiropractic & Wellness. Dr. Sam has a passion for helping people. She wants to keep people active and doing the things that bring them joy in life.

We warmly welcome Dr. Sam as one of our GIRL POWERpresenters!

The evening will be chock full of fun and invaluable information to help the young women in our lives explore and develop their entrepreneurial talents.

Sponsor Feature: Getting to Know PrismWare!

Dream Kitchens

Meet Steve Wortley!

When and how did you get into cycling?
I started getting into road biking seriously when I was about 13. I never rode with anyone — just loved the freedom of rolling over blacktop and finding new places to ride. When mountain bikes came along I thought they looked slow and silly, but one ride on the trails hooked me — a whole new way to find even more places to ride; places I couldn’t explore on my road bike. I’ve done long distance riding with friends, but Hometown is the first team experience I’ve had and I love it.

As a sponsor, how would you like to partner with Hometown and the Team?
PrismWare’s sponsorship is simply an extension of my commitment to, and support of, the Hometown community.

Michigan Financial Planning

Tell us about PrismWare!
PrismWare, Inc. was created years ago as a holding corporation for copyrights and patents I might want to file. Then a couple years ago I invented a jig for faceting glass so a glass artist friend of mine could create geodes and add faceting to pieces. It turns out that there is a niche market for such a device, so I began the patent process and started marketing it under my holding company. The device was quickly picked up by a glass cold working supplier, so now I manufacture and sell the LapDancer faceting jig exclusively through them. The irony that the name PrismWare came years before I developed a device that actually makes prisms is not lost on me.

What’s your favorite hangout in Livingston County?
My favorite hangout, if by no other measure than the number of times I’m there, would be Island Lake State Recreation Area’s Spring Mill Pond. I work from home, so as soon as the weather allows, lunch consists of riding the trails and stopping at SMP to eat. Close seconds would be the Living On The Etch glass studio and Hometown, of course.

Hobbies (other than riding)?
I love hockey. I played for years and may try to get back into it this spring. My son managed Brighton High School’s hockey team and my daughter was on numerous travel teams. They both still play and I still watch BHS games, so I can often be found at some rink or another. I also spend inordinate amounts of time writing software and inventing things. Having a 3D printer allows me to go from concept to prototype with all sorts of crazy ideas.

Winter, spring, summer or fall?
SUMMER! Give me heat!

The elephant in the room, Ladies Night Out countdown, and we smell chili in the air…

Many of you are familiar with the newly installed trade tariffs that are already shaking the cycling industry, which imports much of its products – bikes, parts, and accessories – from overseas. We’re seeing the repercussions deluge down from the manufacturers, to the suppliers, to us local dealers. Last Monday, Jamis instituted a 10% tariff-induced increase across the board… and they’re just one of thousands forced to do the same.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?  We have always been and will always be a service-focused bicycle shop – with a mission of making our value always exceed our price – but we do understand that our customers rely on us to also offer bicycles, parts, and accessories. Prices on these will necessarily be impacted industry-wide, and that includes here at Hometown.

We’ll continue to make decisions that help us provide you with the best value at the best price. In the meantime, we so appreciate your support and understanding. Bear with us – there continue to be exciting things afoot here at Hometown (there always are!), and we won’t let a tariff interfere with the important work we’re doing for you!

To read up on the bicycle tariffs, CLICK HERE.

Team News: Settlers Park Trail Cleanup and Michigan Mountain Mayhem! Thanks to everyone who came out to help work on the new Settlers Park mountain bike trail! A whole slew of volunteers, led by Tom Hermann, gathered on September 29th to beautify and make improvements to the trail located behind Meijer in Hartland.

Team members Mike Dyer, Les Cook, Jim Thompson, Keith Cowgar, Laura Faunce and Scooter Gates put their backs into it alongside Tom. They were also joined by Gage Thompson, Dan Whitman, Matt Mascot, and Elliott Klein and his family.

“We put in 36 hours of work!! It was really fun. We built some really cool features.” – Mike Dyer

The Pathways at Settlers Park consist of a paved 1.2-mile loop and a brand new 2-mile mountain bike path. The Motor City Mountain Biking Association (MCMBA) installed the bike path, which is open to two-way, non-motorized traffic.

Team Hometown Bicycles' Jim Thompson and Mike Dyer muddy buddies at Custers Last Stand Against Human Trafficking Mountain Bike Race in Augusta, MichiganIn other team news, congratulations to Brad Allen and Erik Frazier for competing in the 60-mile Michigan Mountain Mayhem Gravel Road Race at Rotary Park in Boyne City on September 29th. Five monster climbs, lots of fast gravel roads, multiple sections of tough seasonal roads which have sand, mud and rocks, plus a white knuckle descent. Whew!

Then, Mike Dyer and Jim Thompson were muddy buddies at Custer’s Last Stand Against Human Trafficking MTB Race in Augusta, MI on Oct. 6th, rocking 2nd and 3rd respectively in their age groups. Way to take a stand, guys!

Team News: Teaming up and pushing limits

Our very own Trail Build Master, Tom Hermann, showed up to cheer them and Poto Chapter on!

Team Hometown Bicycles Mike and Nancy Kessler on the Marquette Trail in MichiganThen in Cadillac, Michigan on September 22nd, Erik Frazier placed 5th in the Bear Claw Epic Mountain Bike Race. Way to rock the trails, Erik!

Team members Nancy and Mike Kessler (right) took Hometown on the Marquette trails…

… and had this to say: “The trails in Marquette are an ENTIRELY different kind of beast than what we have here. Hard, gnarly, even on ‘easier’ trails. It’s insane.” Good thing this couple loves a challenge!

Shaun of Hometown Bicycles golfing at Kensington Metro Park

And, ummm, Shaun goes golfing?!

You know it’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood when our fearless leader dons his best Hometown golf attire and hits the course. On September 14th, Shaun and father-in-law, Fred, partnered with a third – avid golfer, Brian from Ann Arbor – for the 2nd Annual Charity Golf Classic at Kensington Metropark. Hometown was proud to sponsor this event, which supports the parks that our cyclists love to ride!

“You should have seen [Brian’s] face when he found out I had never golfed before,”Shaun said with his trademark devilish grin. (Poor Brian.)

This golf classic to benefit the Metroparks Foundation featured former Detroit Red Wings player, Darren McCarty, and Detroit Red Wings National Anthem singer,Karen Newman. And, yes, Shaun got to meet both!

Hometown Bicycles donated a Jamis Durango Sport bicycle for the live auction.

When asked how he felt about his first foray into the world of golf, Shaun said,
“I kinda sorta liked it!”

Kem Krest Wellness Fair welcomes Hometown!

Kem Krest logoPartnering with local businesses that put a high value on the health and wellness of their employees is HUGE for Hometown. We love a company that loves its staff.

On September 20th, Shaun headed off to Kem Krest to participate in their annual Wellness Fair. Over 200 employees stopped by the fair to check out the various vendors and classes taking place. Shaun wowed them with a fat tire bike demo and showed off some other awesome bikes.

Thank you, Kem Krest, for making Hometown Bicycles part of your team!

Poses Pedals and Pints in Brewery BeckerAnother successful Poses, Pedals & Pints!

Poses, Pedals & Pints was held at downtown Brighton’s beautiful Brewery Becker on September 16th. Beginner-friendly yoga kicked off the day, followed by a scenic, recreational bike ride with our wonderful team. Participants chose from either 4 or 8 miles. The day wrapped up with a long, cool pull from the taps of Brewery Becker.

Amazing job, Team! We are so proud of you for representing Hometown and being all-around helpful! The weather was perfectly perfect and everyone had a wonderful time.

Thank you to Ashley Knuth with Tocca Massage & Yoga for her tireless efforts in coordinating P3. Over $500 was raised for the Knuth Family Foundation to support young athletes with scholarship awards.

Life’s a climb, but the view is great.
