Hometown Bicycles' Shaun and Dawn Bhajan with family at 2018 Island Lake Spring Bike Demo Day, hosted by MCMBA

DEMO DAY 2018 WITH HOMETOWN BICYCLES

This year’s Island Lake Spring Bike Demo Day, put on by the wonderful folks of the MCMBA, attracted record crowds of over 400 riders and many, many more visitors. Gorgeous weather, eager cyclists, scads of bikes and gear – we’re talking FUN! Shaun and I always make a family affair of it, and what we saw made us extra proud to be Hometownies…

Team Hometown Bicycles volunteers at 2018 Island Lake Spring Bike Demo Day with MCMBA
Above: Our Hometown jerseys and t-shirts were EVERYWHERE… and I’m not just talking about riders, either! Our Team stepped up with lightning speed to fill the majority of the MCMBA Demo Day volunteer spots, as well as our Team tent. Registration, food prep, bike corral – you name it, Hometown was there! Thank you, Team, for being so darn awesome!!

Team Hometown Bicycles' Leslie Cook representing for both Hometown and National Mountain Bike Patrol
Above: Some Team Hometownies even managed to do crossover volunteering, like Leslie here, who represented both Team Hometown and IMBA National Mountain Bike Patrol!

Our Demo Day neighbor was Team Hometown Bicycles Hydration Sponsor Beauchamp Water Treatment and Supply with Sandy Rachwal
Above: Even our Team Sponsors did us proud! Sandy of Beauchamp Water Treatment & Supply kept the Demo Day riders well hydrated from her table beside our tent. Yep, it was an event for building connections, strengthening ties, and advancing our sport!

Team Hometown rider, MCMBA board member, and Demo Day committee chair Steve Steinberg accepting our donation from Demo Day
Above: We want to give a special shout out to Team Hometown’s Steve Steinberg, who is not only on the board of the MCMBA, but also chairs this much-loved Demo Day event – clearly with no small measure of success. We’re proud to have such a devoted cycling advocate on our Team. Congrats on a stellar event, Steve!

At this year’s Demo Day, Hometown Bicycles grilled hot dogs and offered other complimentary refreshments to Demo-goers, while collecting donations to be funneled back into the MCMBA. Here, we’re proudly handing Steve that $188 donation to support the growth of Michigan Mountain Biking. It was a feel-good event, all the way around, and we can’t wait to do it again!

Team Hometown Bicycles showing a little leg at Mud, Sweat and Beers in Traverse City, Michigan

TEAM NEWS:  HOMETOWN SPANS THE STATE

Boy, was our Team hopping this past weekend! They spanned the State – north, west, southwest, and southeast – with bike-bound adventures, advocacy, and races.

Eight Team members competed in Mud, Sweat & Beers Fat Tire Fest and Mountain Bike Race, with Scott Simpson nabbing a 2nd in single speed. Thanks for spreading the Hometown magic all the way up in Traverse City, Brad Allen, Paul Andres, Mike Dyer, Erik Frasier, Scooter Gates, Kevin Machuga, Jim Thompson, and Scott!

Jack Riddle and Matt Price raced 50 and 100 miles consecutively in West Michigan’s Hellkaat Hundie Gravel Road Race. Special shout out to Matt for taking 1st in the Fat Bike class and 15th overall!

Linc Wehrly represented in the Fort Custer Stampede Mountain Bike Race, known for its unique and exciting trails.

Bike Ypsi Spring Ride was 4 riders richer for the addition of Team Hometown’s Adam Baranski, Joe Ostervik, Jacob Henriksen, and Shannon McKay.

And like I mentioned above, not only was the State awash in the Hometown colors – so, too, was Spring Bike Demo Day 2018, where our Team rocked cycling advocacy with volunteer superstardom and participation!

Now, THAT’s the power of a 103-rider Team, Hometownies. Be proud!

THE BEST OF CYCLING, DETERMINATION, AND HEART… ALL IN ONE ROOM!
Earlier this week found our front lawn snowed in under a blanket of Brighton Bulldog bicycles… what a beautiful sight!

After a quick warm up through Island Lake, this local high school cycling team pit stopped at Hometown Bicycles for a lesson in the finer points of preventative bike care and emergency maintenance. Then it was off to the woods for another round of race prep.

Best of luck in your 2017 race season, Bulldogs! It was a privilege to be a part of your upcoming success.

NEXT WEEK: “HOW TO TRAIN FOR A TRIATHLON” CLINIC

Should I work with a coach? How do I get the most out of bricks? How do I train physically and mentally for a sport that involves swim, bike, AND run? What are “junk miles”, and how do I avoid them?  What should my taper look like?

If a triathlon is in your future, these pondering points are just the tip of the triathlon iceberg in terms of prepping for your next (or first!) race. Expert triathlete, IRONMAN Coach, 5-time Kona Qualifier, Registered Dietician, and Hometownie, Amy Gluck, will be covering everything from picking a triathlon to post-tri training analysis in Hometown’s “How to Train for a Triathlon” Clinic.

Held right here in our Community Room, there is NO CHARGE to attend. Choose from two dates: Tuesday (6/6) or Thursday (6/8) at 6pm!

Huron-Clinton Metroparks Charity Golf Classic at Stony Creek Metropark header

COME SEE SHAUN SWING A GOLF CLUB

Hard to imagine your aproned, be-tooled bike guru in knickers and argyle, isn’t it? I’m just kidding… I couldn’t convince Shaun to dress in traditional golf attire, but he’s still going to be wielding clubs on the green at the Huron-Clinton Metroparks Inaugural Charity Golf Classic on June 9th at Stony Creek Metropark.

We’re sponsoring this fundraising event, which will be hosted by Michigan State National Champions, Detroit Pistons Standout and Current Pistons Commentator, Greg Kelser.

Random? Perhaps, but a well-rounded bike guru is a more resourceful bike guru, and that ultimately benefits you, so let’s see what happens! Join us on the green!

SECURING THE FUTURE OF CYCLING

PotoMBA Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day event adIt may seem like a rather bold statement – “securing the future of cycling” – but that’s exactly what you will be doing when you participate in this year’s Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day event on Sunday, June 11th!

Do something healthy with your kids! Have an adventure! Share your love of the sport! This is the kind of event that builds memories and a legacy. Click HERE for more details.

That’s right… with the Saturday deluge hitting Team Hometown Bicycles mid-Tree Farm Relay, everyone got a bike-and-body mud bath on suddenly slippery, sloppy trails. But indomitable spirits prevailed, and our Team had a blast at this much-loved event.

Fist bump to Hometown crewman, Colin Wood, who wound up being one of the fastest in the field. Seriously, we work with the coolest people!

Curious About Mountain Biking?
—- WE’VE GOT A CLINIC FOR THAT! —-

Mountain biker on single track in the woods
(Super-cool image copyright © International Mountain Biking Association [IMBA]. All rights reserved.)

JUST HOW DIFFERENT IS RIDING TRAILS TO RIDING ROADS ANYWAY?

The lure of woodsy single-track strikes just about every cyclist at some point in their life… there’s something almost primal about the need to take a path less traveled.

But mountain biking (MTB) is a very different beast from road riding – with different equipment, challenges, and skill requirements – and that can be downright intimidating.

We get it, and that’s why we’ve created the “So, You Want to Transition to Mountain Biking” Clinic. Jennifer (our Events Coordinator, MTB novice, and instigator of this clinic) and Shaun will talk about these differences, how to prep for your first trail experience, where to ride when you’re ready, and groups and classes that can help. PLUS, we’ll have a variety of demo bikes on hand for you to try what you just learned!
