Hometown Bicycles heading up the Doc May Memorial Melon Fest Ride in Howell, MI

MAKING MEMORIES AT THE MELON FESTIVAL

This past Saturday brought cyclists’ DREAM weather for the annual Doc May Memorial Melon Ride, and the riders loved every minute of it! From the route (which Hometown created and marked), to the ride (which Team Hometown led), to the bike support and valet (which Hometown manned), to the melons and melon ice cream (which Hometown… um… ate in copious quantities), we had an absolute ball giving the wonderful folks of Livingston County a morning to remember!

THANK YOU to Howell Area Parks & Recreation for the continuing opportunity to run this true gem of a ride. THANK YOU to the Team volunteers and staff for your stellar and sunshine-y assistance. And THANK YOU to all of you wonderful Hometownies who joined us for THE BEST Melon Ride to date!

Hometown Bicycles Saturday Singles Road Ride

SINGLES RIDE: OH MY GOSH!! THEY PROPOSED… !!!

… that we should definitely do our Hometown Bicycles singles group ride again! (Couldn’t help myself!) But, even without a love-at-first-sight story, our inaugural Singles Ride was a smashing success, with riders of all ages ♥ing the camaraderie, casual conversation, and bicycle-based connection time. The after-ride mingle went late into the evening – we’d say reluctance to leave equates to a good time! Stay tuned for more singles opportunities…

38th Annual Assenmacher 100
(Photo courtesy Team Hometownie, DJ Joe Ostervik)

TEAM NEWS: THE ASSENMACHER 100

One of the most popular century rides in Michigan, the Assenmacher 100 is a social fun ride through the rolling hills and farmland of Swartz Creek, MI. But when you pair speedster Team riders Jim Cleer, Joe Ostervik, and Joe Van Gordon, “social” tends to translate to peloton pacing. They powered up a swift 20+ mph pace with a group of 15 riders, but our warmest wishes for a speedy recovery to Jim, who took a sharp spill. Hope your recovery is as swift as your pacing, Jim!

AMY’S BLOG: Take 2 (it’s there, I promise…)

Hometown Bicycles' Amy GluckAfter revving up your interest last week for another intriguing Amy’s Blog, I biffed it with a memory fail. Sorry folks! But it’s posted on her blog page now, so you can finally appease your curiosity… I promise!

Every week, Hometown’s Amy Gluck – former All-American IRONMAN triathlete, survivor of a horrific accident, and now ferociously determined to return to IRONMAN – shares a piece of her ongoing story. In the latter half of this week’s blog, Amy gets real with an inside look into the mind of a top-tier, to-the-core athlete… and it’s not what you’d expect!:

… people ask me “what do you think about while you’re doing your long, solo runs and rides?” That’s a tough question to answer.  I’ve honestly had so much trouble concentrating on the bike in an Ironman, I’ve actually started singing the alphabet to distract my mind! Usually, the best thing to do is… READ ON

Hometown Bicycles Service Tech, Mason Verbison

MEET YOUR CREW: MASON VERBISON

Mason is one of those crew members who just “got it” from the get-go. His work ethic as a Service Tech is outstanding, and he’s as friendly as can be – true Hometown material, this one. Mason says:

In June of 2016, I went to buy a mountain bike, thinking it would only be for riding pavement, but after I bought it, i heard about the Brighton Cycling Club and of course I had to try it. I joined the cycling club and was hooked from there on out. I have competed in 5 races and done very well. I went to Hometown to look at a new bike, and Shaun was there to happily help me find a bike that would fit me perfectly. I ended up buying a beautiful Jamis bike, and have had many great adventures, and hopefully many more to come.

Pennylane Resale Facebook page

THE-LOCATION-FORMERLY-KNOWN-AS-HOMETOWN

Does this place look familiar? The colors maybe ring a bell. Possibly the painted floor. Something about it just seems a little… déjà vu.

Oh, wow!! That’s where the former Hometown Bicycles’ service shop was located, next door to where we are today!

I’m personally elated to welcome Pennylane to the neighborhood – owner, Duwayne Jessop, was the founder of one of my favorite salt-and-pepper shaker hunting grounds of all times – Paddywacks of South Lyon. After selling his business, he couldn’t shake the knick-knack bug, and has started up this cozily cluttered store, filled with video games, music, movies, home decor, art, toys, jewelry, tools, collectibles, and the list goes on, and on, and on… Duwayne affectionately refers to them as his chachkies, thingamajigs, whatchamacallits, and doodads.
Pennylane Resale in Brighton, Michigan
All I have to say is that you’ll have to arm wrestle me for the salt-and-pepper shakers! (You think I’m joking.)

Pennylane Resale is open Monday-Saturday 11-7, and Sundays “optional”, at 10603 E. Grand River in Brighton. Call them at (810) 522-5254 or visit their Facebook page.

Please help us welcome our new neighbor by stopping in and saying “hello!” The transformation from bearing grease and chain lube to fun and eclectic treasures is AWESOME to experience first hand!

Team Hometown Bicycles at Fort Custer Stampede
A TEAM TRIUMPHANT AT FORT CUSTER STAMPEDE

“Stampede” in the Fort Custer Stampede Mountain Bike Race would seem to reference Team Hometown’s en masse charge to the podium last weekend! Olga “The Romanian Rocket” Negrut placed 2nd in her division, Doug Queener took a sweet 3rd in his, and Roger Pelkey nabbed 2nd place with his swift ride! Shout out, too, to Justin Ham who made solid headway in a super challenging Expert class.

Hometown Bicycles at the MCMBA Island Lake Spring Bike Demo Day

We sure did this past Saturday, at the MCMBA’s 12th Annual Island Lake Spring Bike Demo Day! With a powerhouse combo of Crew and Team (thanks, volunteers!), we made all sorts of new friends and reconnected with old ones. Our Jamis and Framed demo bikes were put through their paces, and got a lotta love from happy cyclists.

Our top kudos to Team Hometown Bicycles’ Steve Steinberg, who chaired this whopper of an MCMBA event. Well ran, Steve… well ran.

SUPERHERO SUCCESS STORY AT SPENCER

Last week, I talked about Hometown’s support of my own elementary alma mater at their “Calling All Superheroes” 29th Annual Live Auction & Spring Carnival.

Since Hometown was running full bore at Demo Day, our Spencer insider, Lisa Sanzica, kindly shared the photos above (thanks, Lisa!), and informed us that the event was an unmitigated success, with a flood of dollars and support for “cultural enrichment programs, field trips, monthly assemblies and updating our playground area.”

Congratulations, Spencer Elementary of Brighton, on a fantastic event, and thanks for allowing us to be a part of your success!

Hometown Bicycles Crew
(This is everyone, sans CycloDan – I promise to Photoshop you in as soon as I get the chance, Dan!)

YOUR HOMETOWN CREW HAS GROWN…

Our Crew is blooming right along with the Spring greenery! Get ready to meet new additions and spot familiar faces over the coming newsletters. Let’s start with a Hometown legend…

Hometown Bicycles Tim Bart

MEET THE CREW: TIM BART

Tim became part of the Hometown family a-WAYYYYYYYYYY back in early 2013. Even back then, he was one of our customers’ favorites – a fact that hasn’t changed in the passing years. Despite his intense scholastic career as a full time engineering student, Tim has found his way back home to Hometown for the summer. You’ll spot him on the floor, being just as much of a stellar resource to our customers as he ever was. Tim says:

Cycling started for me as a mountain biking hobby that sounded like a fun thing to do with my brother. He took me into Hometown to get my first mountain bike and I left that trip with an awesome new bike, and an awesome new job! This led to an obsession to all things bikes and a lifestyle to include cycling as a major part. Through the group rides, the training grind, and the races, Hometown has been by my side and I am proud to call myself part of the Hometown crew and community!

"Why Jamis?" bike clinic at Hometown BicyclesWhen spring fever is setting in, and you’ve got bike on the brain, your research can bring up more questions than it answers:

     •   How do bike brands compare?

•   What does Jamis offer YOU?

We introduced this clinic last year, and it wound up being our biggest clinic to date! We provide chews and brews, a chance to socialize with fellow bike peeps and ask questions of our “brother-from-a-different-mother” Jamis rep Tom Trentanove, plus the information you need to make a decision that’s right for YOU.

MEET YOUR CREW: CHRIS “CRITTERBUD” BUDDINGH

Chris is wacky and wonderful – a man of many talents with a heart as big as they come. Chris helps keep our shop ship-shape, along with a million other tasks that – somehow – he always seems to be good at. He’s been with us since our early days:

Critterbud defined: Loves family, friends, fun, and God, bicycling… Bigfoot!!!… ‘cycle touring, camping, making music, singing and songwriting… the love of Country and Hometown!!! Stolen quote of the day: “If you’re living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space!!!”

Shaun Bhajan of Hometown Bicycles LOVED riding the spin off at Hamburg Fitness Center
SHAUN’S GOTTEN HOOKED ON SPIN CLASS!

Sunday’s “Spin-Off” with Shaun over at Hamburg Fitness Center & Camp resulted in a full house of Hometownies (thanks for the support!)… and a new convert to spinning!

Instructor Nancy was top-notch, the atmosphere was friendly and encouraging, and the bikes were loaded with Hometownies. It was the kind of class that could encourage a 24/7 bike guru to sneak away from the shop for a weekly spin hit! Stay tuned on Facebook, if you would like to join him!

And, of course, keep a weather eye out in upcoming newsletters for even more opportunities to pick Shaun’s bike brain over at Hamburg Fitness Center & Camp.

New Mountain Biking Intro Clinic + Parties, Rides and Accomplishments

Curious About Mountain Biking?
—- WE’VE GOT A CLINIC FOR THAT! —-

Mountain biker on single track in the woods

JUST HOW DIFFERENT IS RIDING TRAILS TO RIDING ROADS ANYWAY?

The lure of woodsy single-track strikes just about every cyclist at some point in their life… there’s something almost primal about the need to take a path less traveled.

But mountain biking (MTB) is a very different beast from road riding – with different equipment, challenges, and skill requirements – and that can be downright intimidating.

We get it, and that’s why we’ve created the “So, You Want to Transition to Mountain Biking” Clinic. Jennifer (our Events Coordinator, MTB novice, and instigator of this clinic) and Shaun will talk about these differences, how to prep for your first trail experience, where to ride when you’re ready, and groups and classes that can help. PLUS, we’ll have a variety of demo bikes on hand for you to try what you just learned!

CLINIC RUNS TUESDAY, AUGUST 9 AT 6:30PM
in the Hometown Bicycles Community Room
Rest assured, you will NOT have to grow facial hair and wear flannel shirts to participate…

TEAM NEWS: ACHIEVEMENTS THAT REALLY HIT HOME
Just when we think we can’t get any prouder, our Team serves up another dish of “oh, wow!” This time, a couple Team achievers hail right from our very own Hometown crew…

Hometown Bicycles' Events Coordinator Jennifer McCauley takes 2nd place at the Sylvania Women's TriathlonCongratulations to Hometown’s Events Coordinator, Jennifer McCauley, for blowing it out of the water at last weekend’s Sylvania, OH Women’s Only Triathlon and rocking a second place win in her age division! Jennifer designed and will be instructing our upcoming, August 9th “So, You Want to Transition to Mountain Biking” Clinic. She credits MTB cross-training for breaking her out of a plateau and shaving 3 minutes off her triathlon bike time! (see top)

Hometown Bicycles Rides Coordinator Jean Steinberg at the Got Womens Mountain Bike ClinicA round of high fives to Hometown’s Rides Coordinator, Jean Steinberg, who was tapped byCRAMBA (Clinton River Area Mountain Bike Association) to be an instructor at last weekend’s Got MTB Women’s Mountain Bike Clinic. Despite getting caught in a deluge (“I dumped running water out of my shoes twice…”), Jean did our shop and her sport proud, sharing her passion with a bevy of enthusiastic MTB newbies. (There’s another one on August 27th!)

Team Hometown Bicycles' DJ Joe Ostervik at the RAGBRAIAlso, we want to give a “hollah!” to Team Hometownie “DJ Joe” Ostervik, who’s been posting some great pics on Facebook of his RAGBRAI (“The Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa”) adventure in the Team kit. In fact, he’s still out there, enjoying his week-long trek across Iowa. Safe travels, Joe, and thanks for sharing the adventure!
