Hometown Bicycles Chili Cook-Off

Welcome November… Here’s what’s cookin’!

Saturday, November 9th from 4-7 PM

The name tells the tale! Celebrate 4 years in our “new” location, swap harrowing Iceman stories, kick off our famous winter fat bike friendly shop ride, and eat and judge chili!

Stir up your favorite recipe and drop it off at the shop by 4 PM. People’s Choice judging will begin at 5 PM, and the winner will be announced by 7 PM. Be sure to bring your garnishes and serving utensils, and your recipe ingredients written on an index card for allergy-conscious diners.

When you sign up, don’t let us know what kind of chili you’re bringing. It needs to be a surprise! We are all about unbiased voting, folks!

Enter your chili HERE!

Bill St. Onge

PLUS meet Guinness World Records contender, Bill St. Onge, before his round-the-world bike trip!

Bill will be at the shop with his bike and gear to talk about long-riding in general, and specifically his upcoming journey to take on the official Guinness World Records title of “Oldest person to circumnavigate the planet by bicycle”. Bring your curiosity and questions!

Words from Bill: “This coming December, I leave to cycle around the world… that’s “cycle,” as with a pedal-bike. The ride will start and stop in Palm Springs, CA. It will take up to 14 months and cover a total of 34,000 miles across 28 countries. This is a self-supported effort, meaning I’ll travel without the aid of a support team or support vehicle. When finished, I’ll be 71 years old and my knees will probably hurt.”

Check out his blog HERE!

Dan’s Memorial Ride, Demo Day & Birthday Gratitude

REMINDER: Memorial Ride THIS SUNDAY

Dan Horal

The cycling community is grieving the loss of fellow cyclist, Dan Horal, whose life was tragically cut short after being struck by a car mid-ride on April 25th.

To honor Dan and his family, Hometown Bicycles has organized the Do It for Dan Memorial Ride, to take place this Sunday, May 5th at 4:15 PM. Please arrive at 3:45 PM as we gather to finish Dan’s ride and promote awareness that bicyclists and cars share the road.

Dan Horal

To honor Dan, a moment of silence was shared at Hometown Bicycles’ Birthday Bash on Saturday, April 27th. We extend our deepest sympathies to Dan’s family and to everyone who loved him.

Hometown Bicycles

Please note that we will close early at 3 PM on Sunday, May 5th for this event.

Island Lake Demo Day: Saturday, May 4, 10 AM – 4 PM

Island Lake Demo Day

This weekend, be sure to visit the 14th annual Island Lake Spring Bike Demo, a family-friendly event!. It’s a great chance to talk with people who “live the life”: building, riding, and maintaining the bikes you want to own. Then, take a few out for a test spin on the road and trails at Island Lake, finding the bike that pulls at your heartstrings. This event is one of the largest demo events in the region. You can expect to see hundreds of mountain bikes, road bikes, cross bikes, fat tire bikes, and everything in between. Riders usually bring their own pedals, and these will be mounted to the bike for you as part of the setup process.

When entering the park, turn to the right just after the attendant booths and follow the park road for approximately 2 miles. Spring Mill Pond will be on the left side of the road.

Participation at the Spring Bike Demo is free, courtesy of the Motor City Mountain Biking Association. The MCMBA will be serving food midday to all participants and vendors. Hometown Bicycles is providing hot dogs; any and all donations will be contributed to MCMBA. Be sure to stop by our tent, say hello, and eat!

Many thanks to Team Hometown Bicycles member, Steve Steinberg, for his critical role in making this event a reality!

Our Birthday ROCKED Thanks to You!

Hometown Bicycles 9th Birthday

Thanks to all of our wonderful customers, friends, family, volunteers, employees and Team, we had a birthday chock full of fun and special memories!

Hometown Bicycles

The temperatures were brisk, but that didn’t stop us from grilling 100 hot dogs on the front lawn! Team Co-Captain, Joe Ostervik, proved himself to be a wicked grillmaster. Free lunches were served up to the brave souls who ventured out in the 45 degree weather!

Multiple birthday rides left from the shop at 4 PM with cyclists of all skill levels.

Hometown Bicycles

We wrapped up the evening with a rousing fundraising concert to benefit the Brighton High School Cycling Club. The Progressive Blues & Rhythm Bandtreated us to some amazing talent — bluesy rock and roll with a funky twist! Because of everyone’s generosity, we raised over $600 to support our youth cycling community! Way to go, Hometownies!

Pictured below: The PBR Band sings Happy Birthday to Hometown! And Shaun, Dawn and Aria Bhajan celebrate with Coaches TJ and Shawn Tyrell of the BHS Cycling Club.

Dawn Farm Ride for Recovery

Team Hometown Bicycles at Barry Roubaix
Tom Hermann

The Ride for Recovery is a family-oriented fitness event that helps provide critical support to Dawn Farm by raising funds to assist addicts and alcoholics in achieving long-term recovery. Now in its 10th year, this event was originally started by a volunteer seeking to make a difference. Over the years, nearly $150,000 have been raised to help those in need.

Team Hometown was represented by Tom Hermann (right), and Joe Ostervik and Jacob Henriksen (above).
Team Hometown, thank you for being community-driven and supporting an important cause!

Who loves Spring? WE DO!

There’s no better way to enjoy Spring than a Hometown Shop Ride on a beautiful sunny day in Brighton.

We offer beginner, intermediate and advanced rides… all skill levels are welcome!

Don’t have a bike? We rent them! Inquire at the shop.

Make sure to print or pick up your Shop Ride schedule!

We sometimes get asked about the term NO DROP that you see on the Ride descriptions. People wonder if this means you have to register and can’t drop in… no… you can always drop in!

NO DROP simply means that no one is left behind. Each ride had a Lead and a Sweep; the Sweep will make sure that the group stays together and no one gets “dropped”!

Hatching a fledgling business

Hometown Business Incubator
We have a major project going on in Hometown’s back room – a buildout that includes a new business incubator rental space!

What is a business incubator? Business incubators are organizations that offer startups shared operation space. In short, they offer fledgling young companies a warm, safe place to grow and prosper.

Our incubator will be ideal for:

  • Business meetings
  • Networking groups
  • Fitness classes
  • Startup churches
  • Kids programs
  • Arts/crafts programs and classes

Hometown’s business incubator will be available for hourly rentals. Incubator Sponsorships are now available. If you would like to learn about rental or Sponsorship, contact Dawn at office@myhometownbicycles.com.

Grand Opening coming SOON!
