Hometownies, you did it!!!
Hometown Bicycles won Best Bicycle Shop in Livingston Daily’s 2018 People’s Choice Awards! Thank you to everyone for taking the time to let your voices be heard. In addition to our renowned service and outstanding staff, we also have YOU, the best customers in SE Michigan, HANDS DOWN!

Our Team is ahhhh-mazing!!

Who doesn’t love to see our Hometown Team representin’ all across the beautiful state of Michigan? We’re proud as heck of everyone who’s cycling their way into September.

So many races, and so much participation! In August, Amy Daybird competed in the Ludington Lighthouse Triathlon, and Nancy and Mike Kessler took on the Running Fit T-Rex Triathlon. Mike went on to compete in the Dirty Dog Triathlon. (Goooo, Mike!) Next up was the Maybury Time Trial Mountain Bike Race with competitors Mike Dyer, Erik Frazier, Keith Cowger and Jim Thompson. Last but not least, Joe Ostervik raced the Debaets-Devos Pro-Am Memorial.

As we rolled into September, Sarah Dudley-Short and Jeff Short competed in the Tawas Triwith Sarah earning 2^nd overall and Jeff placing 6^th overall. Uncle John’s Dirty Road Raceincluded Jack Riddle, Joe Ostervik, Al DeLeon and James Staples.

The 18^th Annual Labor Day 30K in Milford was attended by Adam Baranski, Cindy Chisholm, Colin Chisholm, Laura Faunce, Jacob Henriksen, Nancy Kessler, Mike Kessler, Joe Ostervik, Roger Pelkey and Marilyn Reichenbach. Joe Ostervik took 2^nd in age group and 9^th overall. Jacob Henriksen got 3^rd in fat bike and Adam Baranski took 5^th in age group.

Way to go, Team!

Hometown lends a hand – and bikes – to Pure MI!

Hometown was totally geeked to lend a handful of bicycles to Pure Michigan for some trail reviewing they’ll be doing over the upcoming months. Team Hometown really stepped up to help – not only did they lead the reconnaissance ride through our beloved Island Lake, but also provided support to the Pure Michigan riders, many who were new to the trails.

Pure Michigan was so appreciative! In lieu of rental payment, we were honored that they instead are making a donation to the BHS Mountain Bike Club on our behalf. And THIS is why we do what we do! Thanks for the opportunity, Pure Michigan! We’re big fans!

2nd Annual Cider, Donuts & Dirt Ride

Our intrepid Team Captain, Jim Cleer, is coordinating the 2^nd Annual Cider, Donuts & Dirt Ride… 40 miles of awesome Livingston County dirt roads that will take you to the historic Parshalville Cider Mill and then on to Markillie’s Apple Orchard for their incredible caramel apple chips. This is a no-drop, conversational-paced ride of approximately 15-16 mph. After the ride, head on over to Wooly Bully’s for some adult libations and foooood.

October 7TH: Tour de Livingston 2018

We’re just a few weeks away from Hometown’s, hands-down-favorite, local ride – the scenic and sensational Tour de Livingston! With distances ranging from 5 to 100 miles, routes that cover the prettiest parts of Livingston County during peak fall color, and the opportunity to ride GM Proving Grounds, this Howell Rotary fundraiser for Livingston County United Way is an absolute must-ride!

Turns out League of Michigan Bicyclists (LMB)is adding two new members to their team: Communications Director and Development Director. These positions are a wonderful opportunity for cycling enthusiasts to make a big impact in the sport they love. This year alone, LMB passed seven laws towards the betterment of Michigan cycling. “Just wanted to let you know our ride from Buffalo to Albany, New York was spectacular! The ride ranged from paved bike trails, city streets and roads, singletrack, crushed limestone – all connections that make up the Erie Canal Bike Route. We rode over 400 miles!

On our way back to Michigan, we stopped in Niagara Falls, Canada and rode 35 miles on the Niagara River Recreation Trail. We just had to dip our hands in Lake Ontario, the only Great Lake we had never visited. Thanks to the Hometown mechanics, our bikes held up great and we had no problems. We’re already thinking about next summer’s big trip, so if there is anyone who is interested in bike touring, see us!”

A Sensational Summer of MI Cycling

WE’RE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF EVERY GLORIOUS, MICHIGAN MOMENT…
Our shop and our Team are in full swing, carpe diem-ing the heck out of this wonderful stretch of weather, in this wonderful State that we call home.

Just last weekend, Hometown kicked off the 2018 Howell Melon Festival’s annual Doc May Memorial Bike Ride with its largest turnout to date! Our Team went above and beyond to make the experience spectacular for all, from planning and marking the routes (kudos, Tom Hermann, for the most complimented routes in the history of the event!), to manning Hometown’s courtesy bike corral, to running the ride. Thanks, Team, for the amazing effort!

Seven of our own also rocked the mileage on last weekend’s Assenmacher 100 social century, touring the farmlands and villages of scenic mid-Michigan. Can we get a “whoop! whoop!” for Adam Baranski, Jim Cleer, Robin Fry, Jacob Henriksen, Joe Ostervik, James Staples, and Vicky Vulaj!?

Bonus props to the brains behind the earlier “Eff Cancer Ride”, Colin and Cynthia Chisholm, who recently raced Michigan’s largest, mass start, point-to-point mountain bike event, Ore to Shore!

Thanks to the amazing adventures of our intrepid Hometownies, Hometown has traveled the globe!Just recently, we achieved new heights in Vail with lungs-of-steel, legs-of-steel duo, Dr. Matt and Argenta Matuszak.

Dr. Matuszak writes: “We spent all day biking up and down Vail Mountain: 20 miles, 3,500-foot gain. Hometown conquered Vail! Next time, either Keystone or Aspen!!”

Meet Christine Addy
In 2014, Christine started an in-home painting party business, after getting hooked on Paint with a Twist and Paint & Pour. But painful neuropathy set in, creeping from feet, to legs, and finally hands. Her doctor advised she give up painting, but Christine discovered a technique called paint pouring that allows her to paint without using a brush! “It is very therapeutic and relaxing and, like clouds or snow flakes, no two are alike.” Drop in to enjoy and purchase her bike-themed, paint-poured pieces!

And the Taste of Brighton bicycle goes to…

MEMORY-MAKING AT “A TASTE OF BRIGHTON” & JULY JUBILEE
Last weekend was a 3-day fun-a-thon, kicking off with our first-and-definitely-not-last participation in A Taste of Brighton street fest (photo above), and ending Sunday with Hometown’s annual July Jubilee & Concert (photos below). In fact, many of you readers are new friends we made over the weekend… welcome, and thank you for the chance to get to know you!

We’ve got photographic proof of the fun that was had – check out the highlights below! (And if you’re itching to know who won our Taste of Brighton bike drawing, scroll down a little further… )

Our July Jubilee kicked off with Cardio Drumming-Zumba Fusion taught by Martha Soraruf (middle) andLeslie Barrett (left; who, incidentally, also coordinated the entire event – awesome job, Leslie!!). Jim and Sherryl of Yoga Nature took our event to new heights with jaw-dropping AcroYoga antics (right)!

Inside, kids made an eager beeline for Alison Peasley’s face painting table (left). Dr. Kyle (middle) and Kassy (right) of Lifetime Family Chiropractic were a crowd favorite with their muscle-melting chair massages.

Outside, CJ and Sarah of Brighton ATA Martial Arts wowed spectators with weapons, sparring, and board-breaking demos (left). Tour de Livingston/Howell Rotary made a welcome presence as they promoted this year’s ride – October 7th! – and the chance to win a Hometown-donated Jamis Renegade gravel bike (middle)! Visitors loved the lawn games provided courtesy Hamburg Fitness Center & Camp (right)!

We were joined by a remarkable family – Thaddeus McGaffey (left), who runs A Taste of Brighton, found enough energy reserves on the heels of HIS big event, to come out and support ours! His entrepreneurial mermaid daughter, Phaedre, posed for pictures with adoring young visitors (right). Meanwhile, wife, Debra of One Spirit Dance & Fitness, showcased the exquisite, core-of-steel art form of belly dancing (middle)!

Despite the soaring heat index, families joined in on July Jubilee road and mountain bike rides. Helmets off to Officers Steve and Brittany of Green Oak Charter Township Police Department, who provided much-appreciated Grand River crossing assistance! Hungry riders returned to hot dogs, cotton candy, and hydration (water courtesy our rockstar Beauchamp Water Treatment peeps!)

The evening wrapped up soulfully with the melodic blues-rock of Hometown Service Tech Dan Tribble and his PBR Band. This concert raised $538 for Hometownie Dan Rosenhack, undergoing costly medical treatments for terminal brain cancer, and his wonderfully supportive family.

Cameron Hauenstein! Our congrats goes to this uber-excited winner of the bicycle drawing we ran from our Hometown tent at A Taste of Brighton. Cameron and his family can’t wait to start adventuring. Happy cycling, Hauenstein family!

INTRODUCING WEEKLY YOGA AT HOMETOWN

In addition to Zumba and Cardio Drumming, you can now bend and breathe your way to centered in Hometown Bicycles’ Community Room with yogi Stacy Mulka. Stacy’s Hatha Yoga classes run THURSDAYS AT NOON, and help humans of all flexibilities (and inflexibilities) loosen up, limber up, and lighten up! $10 per class. Details are here!

TEAM HOMETOWN NEWS: Couples’ Week!

This week, our Team couples took center stage. Mike (also your Hometown sales associate!) and wife Marybeth (left photo) enjoyed a 2-mile, after-hours tour of the Detroit Zoo on Bike Safari, a casual combo of “Bicycle, Beast, and Beer.”Next up is the racing duo of Jeff and Sarah Short (right photo), who competed in Holly’s 3 Disciplines Aquabike – Jeff sped through the Sprint and Sarah powered through the Olympic distance course. Way to go, guys!

Racing solo, but with enough energy for two, Jacob Henriksen put the hammer down at Mid Michigan College’s Sweat Shaker Mountain Bike Race. Go, Jacob, go!

Team Hometown Bicycles' Jean Steinberg teaching students at an MMBA Mountain Bike Skills Clinic near Alpena And finally, a shout out goes to a couple of quality Hometownies, Jean Steinberg and Heather McNamara, for assisting the MMBA at a recent mountain bike skills clinics near Alpena. That’s the spirit, ladies! A more advanced clinic is coming up in August for any interested parties – “Roots, Rocks & Berms”…

KIDS & ADULTS: LEARN TO RIDE A BIKE!

In SELCRA’s upcoming Biking Basics class, Shaun of Hometown Bicycles will help bike newbies of ANY age ditch the training aids and enter the world of two-wheeled adventures! RIDE WITH YOUR HOMETOWN TEAM & CREW AT TOMORROW’S KICK-OFF!

Every year, Hometown joins forces with our Howell Rotary and Livingston County United Way peeps to run a FREE, family-friendly, multi-loop ride on Howell’s scenic roadways. The Kick-Off Ride coordinates with the breathtaking balloon fly-in for the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest, and builds awareness for the much-loved Tour de Livingston, run annually in the Fall.

Our Team and Crew have marked the routes and will be on hand to lead the rides. Come on out this Sunday, June 24 at 6:45am and ride with us!

(Note: Our shop will still be open at 9am on Sunday – be sure to drop by after the ride and make those few of us who stayed behind jealous!)

AN UNPRECEDENTED SALUTE TO A STELLAR CREW MEMBER

WE WILL BE CLOSING EARLY (4PM) THIS SUNDAY (6/24)

Everybody knows Andrew. Hometown Service Lead Andrew Jackson has been a fixture at our shop for the past 4 years. He’s unfurled his wings with us, evolving from a youthful and studious Service Tech to a self-assured, highly-skilled leader. He’s respected by customers and crew alike, and is the sort of guy you would describe as a “genuinely good human being”.

We knew our time with Andrew was limited by his unshakeable aspiration to study Engineering. And now that he’s graduated, that time is coming to a close, as he prepares for college and future greatness.

For the first time in the history of Hometown, we are closing the shop early, so that Shaun and I, and all of his fellow Crew members, can attend Andrew’s graduation party. We don’t know how to give you any greater compliment on your exceptional contribution to Hometown, Andrew. Congratulations, and we look forward to seeing what amazing things you accomplish!

TEAM NEWS: Long Rides & Mountain Mayhem

Your Team continues to have a pedal in every pie, starting with the adventurous Shannon McKay, who biked 114 miles from Chicago to New Buffalo, MI with Le Tour de Shore. Awesome sauce, Shannon!

Brad Allen and Jack Riddle attacked grueling gradients on one of Michigan’s toughest road bike challenges, the Michigan Mountain Mayhem Spring Classic. Meanwhile, Team Captain Jim Cleer road a FULL 24 HOURS in the National 24 Hour Bike Challenge, billed as the nation’s oldest and largest ultramarathon cycling event. “The burn isn’t telling me to stop. It’s telling me it’s working!” – way to go, guys!!

And we just want to give a newsletter high-five to these two Team dads, Paul Andres and Mike Dyer, who cycled with their families for Father’s Day. Cool beans!

This ‘funk’y fundraising concert rounds out our July Jubilee celebration with the bluesy rock and roll of Hometown’s long time service tech and purveyor of extraordinary bike knowledge, Dan “CycloDan” Tribble, and his PBR Band.Enjoy outstanding music, dancing, snacks (BYOB), and socializing… all while directly supporting your fellow cyclist and Hometownie, Dan Rosenhack, and his amazing family. Dan’s diagnosis of terminal brain cancer has resulted in costly medical and living expenses, and this concert is geared to help relieve the financial strain on his family. Half of your $10 cover charge helps pay for the band, and half will be gifted to Dan Rosenhack’s family.

It’s laid back, funky fun that will wow your ears and tickle your tastebuds, all while supporting a deeply meaningful cause.Please let us know you’re coming, so we can plan for enough refreshments!

This year, Hometown’s headed downtown July 13th & 14th (with July Jubilee on the 15th!) for the annual A Taste of Brighton affair, where we’ll give festival-goers a flavor of what makes our shop and our sport so darn special! Shaun will be on stage running several Bike Care 101 and Flat Tire Fix clinics throughout the event, and our tent will be crankin’, with our Service Crew demo-ing what we’re famous for – the best bike repair in Southeast Michigan! Add this event to your family calendar, and be sure to stop by and say “hi!”

RIDE WITH SHAUN IN BRIGHTON’S JULY 4 PARADE!

This year, the whole family – Shaun and I and the kids – will be riding in Brighton’s 4th of July Parade, and we’re calling on all families with kids ages kindergarten through 5th grade to join us! There’s no charge!!

Brighton Optimist Club is the annual host of this well-loved Bike Decorating Contest & Parade Ride, and Hometown has enjoyed the privilege of helping their program grow year by year. In addition to hosting bike decorating parties at our shop and offering complimentary bike checks and helmet discounts to participants, we’re also providing free bicycle delivery and pick-up service to and from the parade! KIDS SELF DEFENSE CLASS AT HOMETOWN

If someone wants to hurt our children, they won’t choose a time or a place with witnesses. That means no parents, no teachers, no policemen, just our children and the predator. The safety of our children will depend on their ability to recognize a threat and respond effectively.

Hometown is thrilled to welcome back outstanding instructor, Ian Kinder of Live Safe Academy for a fun, interactive and age-appropriate workshop that teaches essential, lifesaving information about the threats facing our children, strategies for prevention and real world techniques designed to reduce their risk of abductions, assaults and other forms of violence. But most of all, these programs teach students that they have the right to be safe, that no one has the right to hurt them and that they are worth protecting.

Coed, for ages 6-12. Class fee is $25. REGISTER NOW!

HELP LAW ENFORCEMENT UNDERSTAND CYCLIST NEEDS

The League of Michigan Bicyclists is always up to something exciting, and their latest adventure is a new training series, designed for law enforcement and cyclists, being held across the State. They note that each session is interactive, and addresses:

• MI Vehicle Code and MI Compiled Laws
segments relating to the use of the bicycle
on MI roadways and sidewalks.
• Best practices for bicycle crash investigation
and reporting.
• Updates on accepted engineering designs
for bicycle travel.
• Safe bicycling practices.

A and B groups will average 10-15+ mph. Road bikes only! Please have some experience on your bike, along with basic shifting and braking skills for the safety of the group. Ladies, this one’s just for you! This weekly, road ride is for gals of all ability levels. We’ll ride the well-known “green dumpster” loop at Island Lake (~14 miles) at a conversational, 10mph pace. Gravel Grinding 101
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27 | 6:00PM (MEET BY 5:45PM) | FROM HOMETOWN
Ride with your Hometown bike guru, CycloDan Tribble! Front and rear light required, as we end at dusk. This ride weaves through and around Island Lake, covering 13+ miles of pavement, dirt trails and gravel roads (a few hills just for fun!) at an average 12-13 mph. Expect a “puddle” or two of sand and a few face slappers on the trails this time of year. Nothing our gravel, adventure or mountain/fat bikes can’t easily handle. Skinny tire bikes will NOT work for this ride. All levels welcome – NO DROP RIDE. Check Facebook for ride confirmation and changes!

Ladies Only Beginner Mountain Bike Ride
