Hometown Bicycles Service Crew racing in the MiSCA interscholastic cycling series(Hometown Crew from left to right: Conor Riddle, Joe Shafer, Matt Persha, Andrew Jackson, Kade Wirth, and Mason Verbison.)

FROM SHOP TO TRAILS – OUR CREW STICKS TOGETHER

We’re enormously proud of the high school members of Hometown’s Service Crew, pictured above, who just competed in their first interscholastic mountain bike race of the season. These guys study hard, work hard, ride hard… and are some of the nicest humans you’ll ever meet.

Kudos to Kade and Mason, who carried home a 2nd and 3rd consecutively in JV. And please join us in cheering up Andrew, whose untimely broken wrist will prevent him from riding most of his Senior Year season. He’s been philisophically and stoically “Andrew” about it, but we’re bummed for him nonetheless.

It’s funny how seeing this photo makes Shaun and I nostalgic. We remember when Brighton Cycling team was just a twinkle in one particularly memorable Hometownie’s eye… and in honor of the upcoming school year and team cycling season, this seems like a truly fitting time to share the story with you about how it all got started…

A BRIEF HISTORY OF BRIGHTON BULLDOG CYCLING

Back in 2011, Hometown’s 6th employee, CJ Brish, was a highly-driven, high school wrestling star, who took up bike riding to cut weight. But, man, did he love to ride! CJ competed independently at as many bike races as he could fit into his packed schedule.

Hometown Bicycles CJ Brish and Ray Danglemaier
(Clockwise from top left: CJ at his 1st road race – Milford Crit; Ray and CJ sporting the original Hometown race kit; Ray gleefully building up the bike he earned as part of a Jamis Grassroots Sponsorship)

At one particular race, he noticed Lake Orion kitted out as a team, and that got him wondering… could he rally up a team of his own? He put the question to Shaun, and after some brainstorming, they decided CJ’s first connection should be with Brighton High School principal, Gavin Johnson. A GREAT choice, as it turned out.

Gavin was extremely receptive, and he challenged CJ to market the idea to fellow students. CJ quickly recruited a handful of cyclists, including two you may know, as they also became members of Hometown’s early crew – Ray Danglemaier and Jack Johnson. With undeniable student interest, the support of Gavin and BHS teacher (and Hometownie) Ted Buckless, and a remarkable level of advocacy from parents like Hometown VIP Dennis Hall, Brighton Cycling was born!

Hometown Bicycles CJ Brish and Ray Danglemaier
(CJ and Ray come home tired but hooked after their very first Iceman!)

Since 2011, we’ve seen the team grow better, stronger, and faster – even winning two State Championships with the help of Hometown’s intellectual speedster, Colin Wood, who Captained Brighton Cycling. Coaches TJ and Shawn Tyrrell have trained the team to a whole new level of incredible, and in true family fashion (you know how much we love that here at Hometown), that included their daughter, Brooke!

Hometown Bicycles' CJ Brish raced for Lindenwood on scholarship
(CJ racing for Lindenwood at the Collegiate National Championships)

We’re so proud to see how Brighton Cycling has grown and evolved. We’re so proud of ALL of our interscholastically racing staff: Andrew Jackson (who’s currently trying to get a team started at St. Mary’s), Matt Persha (who races for Catholic Central), and our Bulldogs – Conor Riddle (team Captain), Joe Shafer, Mason Verbison, and Kade Wirth. Come out and cheer them on at their next school race on September 10th at Island Lake. Younger riders kick off at 10am and the rest begin at 11:30am.

Hometown Bicycles' Ray Danglemaier raced for Brevard on Scholarship
(Ray racing for Brevard at the Collegiate National Championships. They won!)

We’re also super proud of where the sport of cycling has taken some of our original Hometownies…

CJ and Ray, with their intense drive and focus, earned cycling scholarships to Lindenwood (CJ) and Brevard (Ray). CJ, by the way, is currently living his dream, working for Back Country Bikes in Colorado, and biking the insane “hills” of the region.

Looking forward, we’re currently working with Debbie Andrews, a teacher in Howell, and Tom Hermann, a Team Hometown rider and teacher in the Pinckney Schools system, who are trying to start teams in their communities. If you’re interested in helping them out, contact the shop, and we’ll connect you. You never know what kind of legacy your support will create!

TEAM NEWS: MAYBURY, DEBAETS-DEVOS & MORE

Our Team had a busy weekend, starting with a triumphant takeover at the 12th annual Maybury State Park Time Trial, which benefits the MCMBA. Mike Dyer put in a powerful ride, Scott Simpson nabbed a 1st in Retro Class, and Olga “The Romanian Rocket” Negrut topped off her typical, stellar performance with a 1st in Women’s Expert. Way to go, Team!

Team Hometown Bicycles' Joe Ostervik at Debaets-Devos Criterium Race

Joe Ostervik (above) took Hometown for a heady spin around the 1.35 mile loop at the Annual Debaetes-Devos Pro-Am Bicycle Race in Auburn Hills. You can “ride” this Criterium Championship with Joe, by clicking his video above! Nice riding, Joe!

Hurrah! to all of you who are participating in this weekend’s Milford Labor Day 30K Fat Tire/Cyclocross Ride. And we want to give a special shout out to Team Captain Brian Forhan, who goes in for back surgery on Wednesday. Brian, we’re rooting for this to get you back in the saddle, pain-free and rarin’ to roll! Best wishes from all of your Hometownies!!

AMY’S BLOG: 9/1/17

Hometown Bicycles' Amy Gluck at Running Between the VinesEvery week, Hometown’s Amy Gluck – former All-American IRONMAN triathlete, survivor of a horrific accident, and now ferociously determined to return to IRONMAN – shares a piece of her ongoing story. This week, Amy waxes poetic (well, educational) on why drinking and running are a good mix!:

… What’s the deal with alcohol at a fitness event, you’re wondering?  For this one, it kills two birds with one stone!  The wine tasting entices more people to give running a try.  And the race entices runners to give wines a try.  Two different worlds bringing an interesting group of people together… READ ON

SPEAK UP!  LIVINGSTON COUNTY BIKE WAYS

Non motorized transportation in Livingston County flierWe hear it all the time – intense concern about the lack of safe bike ways in our community. Sidewalks are too narrow for safe, 2-way passage, and many of our roads’ shoulders are anything BUT cyclist-friendly!

Here’s your chance to speak up and make a difference! This forum, presented by the Livingston County Transportation Coalition, was shared with us by LCTC Chairman, Leo Hannifin (thanks, Leo!) All interested community members are invited to join the discussion centered around:

  • How would a county-wide network of non-motorized paths and lanes impact our communities and our residents?
  • What non-motorized routes would be most desirable in our county or from our county to nearby destinations?

The forum runs Tuesday, September 12th from 3-4:15pm at 622 E. Grand River in Howell. CLICK HERE for more information.

Hometown Bicycles heading up the Doc May Memorial Melon Fest Ride in Howell, MI

MAKING MEMORIES AT THE MELON FESTIVAL

This past Saturday brought cyclists’ DREAM weather for the annual Doc May Memorial Melon Ride, and the riders loved every minute of it! From the route (which Hometown created and marked), to the ride (which Team Hometown led), to the bike support and valet (which Hometown manned), to the melons and melon ice cream (which Hometown… um… ate in copious quantities), we had an absolute ball giving the wonderful folks of Livingston County a morning to remember!

THANK YOU to Howell Area Parks & Recreation for the continuing opportunity to run this true gem of a ride. THANK YOU to the Team volunteers and staff for your stellar and sunshine-y assistance. And THANK YOU to all of you wonderful Hometownies who joined us for THE BEST Melon Ride to date!

Hometown Bicycles Saturday Singles Road Ride

SINGLES RIDE: OH MY GOSH!! THEY PROPOSED… !!!

… that we should definitely do our Hometown Bicycles singles group ride again! (Couldn’t help myself!) But, even without a love-at-first-sight story, our inaugural Singles Ride was a smashing success, with riders of all ages ♥ing the camaraderie, casual conversation, and bicycle-based connection time. The after-ride mingle went late into the evening – we’d say reluctance to leave equates to a good time! Stay tuned for more singles opportunities…

38th Annual Assenmacher 100
(Photo courtesy Team Hometownie, DJ Joe Ostervik)

TEAM NEWS: THE ASSENMACHER 100

One of the most popular century rides in Michigan, the Assenmacher 100 is a social fun ride through the rolling hills and farmland of Swartz Creek, MI. But when you pair speedster Team riders Jim Cleer, Joe Ostervik, and Joe Van Gordon, “social” tends to translate to peloton pacing. They powered up a swift 20+ mph pace with a group of 15 riders, but our warmest wishes for a speedy recovery to Jim, who took a sharp spill. Hope your recovery is as swift as your pacing, Jim!

AMY’S BLOG: Take 2 (it’s there, I promise…)

Hometown Bicycles' Amy GluckAfter revving up your interest last week for another intriguing Amy’s Blog, I biffed it with a memory fail. Sorry folks! But it’s posted on her blog page now, so you can finally appease your curiosity… I promise!

Every week, Hometown’s Amy Gluck – former All-American IRONMAN triathlete, survivor of a horrific accident, and now ferociously determined to return to IRONMAN – shares a piece of her ongoing story. In the latter half of this week’s blog, Amy gets real with an inside look into the mind of a top-tier, to-the-core athlete… and it’s not what you’d expect!:

… people ask me “what do you think about while you’re doing your long, solo runs and rides?” That’s a tough question to answer.  I’ve honestly had so much trouble concentrating on the bike in an Ironman, I’ve actually started singing the alphabet to distract my mind! Usually, the best thing to do is… READ ON

MEET YOUR CREW: MASON VERBISON

Mason is one of those crew members who just “got it” from the get-go. His work ethic as a Service Tech is outstanding, and he’s as friendly as can be – true Hometown material, this one. Mason says:

In June of 2016, I went to buy a mountain bike, thinking it would only be for riding pavement, but after I bought it, i heard about the Brighton Cycling Club and of course I had to try it. I joined the cycling club and was hooked from there on out. I have competed in 5 races and done very well. I went to Hometown to look at a new bike, and Shaun was there to happily help me find a bike that would fit me perfectly. I ended up buying a beautiful Jamis bike, and have had many great adventures, and hopefully many more to come.

Pennylane Resale Facebook page

THE-LOCATION-FORMERLY-KNOWN-AS-HOMETOWN

Does this place look familiar? The colors maybe ring a bell. Possibly the painted floor. Something about it just seems a little… déjà vu.

Oh, wow!! That’s where the former Hometown Bicycles’ service shop was located, next door to where we are today!

I’m personally elated to welcome Pennylane to the neighborhood – owner, Duwayne Jessop, was the founder of one of my favorite salt-and-pepper shaker hunting grounds of all times – Paddywacks of South Lyon. After selling his business, he couldn’t shake the knick-knack bug, and has started up this cozily cluttered store, filled with video games, music, movies, home decor, art, toys, jewelry, tools, collectibles, and the list goes on, and on, and on… Duwayne affectionately refers to them as his chachkies, thingamajigs, whatchamacallits, and doodads.
Pennylane Resale in Brighton, Michigan
All I have to say is that you’ll have to arm wrestle me for the salt-and-pepper shakers! (You think I’m joking.)

Pennylane Resale is open Monday-Saturday 11-7, and Sundays “optional”, at 10603 E. Grand River in Brighton. Call them at (810) 522-5254 or visit their Facebook page.

Please help us welcome our new neighbor by stopping in and saying “hello!” The transformation from bearing grease and chain lube to fun and eclectic treasures is AWESOME to experience first hand!

Recently, we’ve been enjoying a whirlwind of field trips to key Tour sponsors to place the donation bikes around town where they can be seen by the Community and encourage Tour de Livingston registrations.

Our mission? To maximize participation for this much-loved, Howell Rotary created and run, local ride, which fundraises for the Livingston County United Way. In other words, those dollars stay in our Community!

If you’re up for a challenge, we invite you to travel the County to see how many of our donation bikes you can spot. FOLLOW OUR FACEBOOK PAGE FOR LOCATIONS! They’re not all delivered yet, so we’ll post ’em as we place ’em. First one to report back with selfie proof of visiting ALL TEN wins a special Hometown prize and some newsletter/Facebook fame!

ORE-TO-SHORE: IS IT A RACE OR A RIDE?

Talk about entertaining! This rollicking adventure of a story from Hometown’s Ride Coordinator, Jean Steinberg, gives you a lively overview of her and her family’s Ore-to-Shore cycling exploits:

Hometown Bicycles' Jean and Steve Steinberg at Ore to ShoreI can honestly say I have experienced racing Ore to Shore from both ends thanks to my family over the years. The scariest was dangling a water bottle out for the switch to a family member in the top 5 elite pack going a bazillion miles per hour! I’ve raced it myself and now, thanks to my sister’s bucket list, I’ve “ridden” the race.

In January, we all got the invitation that we WOULD be registering for the Ore to Shore race in honor of Lynn’s 50th birthday (and living daily with MS) – it seemed like a good idea in winter from Arizona. Our husbands and a friend accepted the invite and the planning began. Camp in Marquette’s Tourist Park, ride Marquette North, Marquette South and then Valley Spur or Hanson Hills depending on weather or time. Don’t forget the bike ride to Donker’s in town for candy and ice cream! A race was a reason to explore on the bikes.

Ore to ShoreIn the end, it was the most wonderful race we’ve ever ridden! No real rush to hammer down breakfast, let the stress get to your stomach and watch the heart rate elevate before even taking the first pedal stroke! We took time for pre-ride photos in front of the water and then found a place near the back of the start. Our party of 5 realized from the early miles that people must participate not just for the podium, but just because they can.

We got log-jammed as the broad range of people came to narrower paths and the riding skill levels became apparent. Didn’t matter to us – we weren’t racing the clock, just checking off the bucket list item. The climbs were still climbs, but there was time to breath in the beauty of the surroundings. At this pace, they weren’t a mere blur! There were bikes stopped on the side for mechanicals and people stopped on the side to recover from the climbs. A unique aid station – water, bananas and Coor’s Light! And then there was the guy who’s bike just needed to be shot and put out of it’s misery – that derailleur was totally shot! Another impatient rider Hometown Bicycles Jean Steinberg mountain bikingdecided the slower single passage right of the HUGE mud swamp wasn’t the only way around – he blazed left into the water and all I heard was pedal, pedal . . . and then a big splash! I smiled.

We did encounter racing speeds down the steep two-tracks and thankfully bounded in the correct direction after encountering the slick rocks at that speed. We passed and were passed as time ticked by. As we hit the end of the trail and headed out the two-track to the pavement, the pace increased a bit – kind of like the horse headed back to the stable (my sister’s signature move). As we rounded the last curve before the finish, we were all where we needed to be – we heard the announcer proclaim “Synchronized Team Racing, 2nd place finishers”. We were perfectly spaced, 5 wide, with the Birthday Girl in the center!

AMY’S BLOG: AUGUST 18, 2017

Hometown Bicycles' Amy GluckEvery week, Hometown’s Amy Gluck – former All-American IRONMAN triathlete, survivor of a horrific accident, and now ferociously determined to return to IRONMAN – shares a piece of her ongoing story.

MEET YOUR CREW: JOEL RUSHLOW

Joel is our newest crew member, but has been a regular of our group rides for some time now. He’s hard-working and undeniably passionate about the sport of cycling. You won’t want to miss his write-up on his solo bike expedition (see section below)! As Joel says it:

I’m not sure why I continue to love cycling, or even what made me want to start coming to group rides, but what I do know is how I got into bikes. I got my first new bike in spring of 2016, it was a heavy hybrid, I rode it every day all summer, until I decided that I wanted another bike. My next bike was a Lemond, I rode it every day and as I rode it, the more I got to love it.

After a while, I decided to go for a group ride, so I went to Hometown for the Wednesday night [Hammerfest] ride. I got dropped so quickly, I never thought that there were people that fast locally. That is where my love for bikes accelerated. I began doing hill repeats and eventually, I got fast enough to go on the “Son of Hammerfest”, and I continue to go on these rides whenever I can. I am always thinking about where my next ride is going to be, or what bike I’m getting next, or how I can get faster on the road.

JOEL’S BIKE TRIP TO THE “THUMB”

Hometown Bicycles' Joel Rushlow on a solo bicycle expedition to Port SanilacNow that you’ve met Joel, you’ll enjoy his story about last weekend’s cycling adventure – where this intrepid teen traversed the state on a solo bike trip to Port Sanilac, MI:

As a road bicyclist, I have always dreamt of doing a large ride, and when I heard of the DALMAC, I was very interested. However, being a minor from a family that”s not into bikes, I did not have an adult to accompany me. When registration closed, I quickly realized that I would not able to do this this year, so I decided that since we were going to my uncle’s cottage in Port Sanilac, I may as well ride there. So I did exactly that, I packed my bags and rode my bike 27 miles to a family member’s house in Linden, so I could sleep there for a night then head to Port Sanilac the next day.

Despite a flat tire and a brake problem on the first day, and getting lost in a bad area the second day, the trip was great. I was 3 miles away from the cottage when it got dark, so I continued my ride until I got there. Nearly every road I was on, I stayed on for at least 10 miles as that is the kind of riding that I enjoy; not too many turns, no bike paths, and not too populated. However, during this ride, being that it was 105 miles, I was just wanting the next turn to come and I was ready to be off of the busy roads and away from the smelly farms. By the end, my legs were surprisingly okay. They were stiff but I stretched before I went to bed and they were fine for the jet skis the next day.

Flying home was probably one of the best parts of the weekend. We flew by Lake Huron and by the time we were 15 minutes in, we saw Canada on the other side of the lake.

The ride turned out to be 132.8 miles from both days, 27.0 the first and 105.8 the next. I will definitely be doing this again when I have the opportunity, and hopefully, I will be doing even bigger tours in the future.

HOMETOWN VISITS BROWN COUNTY STATE PARK, IN

Our first story comes from the breathtaking hillscape of Brown County State Park in Indiana, where Team members Mike Dyer, Paul Andres, Jim Thompson, Keith Cowgar, and friend Andrew set aside racing for a bike-based “guys weekend”. Mike writes:

All I can say is it was a hell of an adventure. We made it out in one piece. No major injuries just some cuts, scrapes and bruises. Paul wins the most wounds of the weekend, and I win the most spectacular crash with a big endo over a rock garden!

AMY’S BLOG: AUGUST 11, 2017

Every week, Hometown’s Amy Gluck – former All-American IRONMAN triathlete, survivor of a horrific accident, and now ferociously determined to return to IRONMAN – shares a piece of her ongoing story. This one will give you goosebumps…

Getting running back has been my biggest struggle following my accident.  It’s so frustrating watching my pace crash when I check my results after races. I’m doing EVERYTHING I can to recuperate my running… but sometimes I wonder if it’s really worth it.  Do I really need to come back to Ironman racing, or was surviving this accident good enough?   But it’s all I knew before my accident.  It’s all I did.  What keeps me motivated is… READ ON

Miles and Ann Janicki celebrating 32 years of marriage with a Hometown Bicycles style cycling adventure!

HAPPY 32 YEARS, MILES & ANN!

This next story hails from a wonderful couple who have been Hometownies to a remarkable degree. Miles and Ann Janicki recently took Hometown (and their trusty Jamis bikes!) with them on an especially meaningful adventure on the west side of our beautiful State:

We’re celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary in Hometown style!  We’ve enjoyed being part of the Hometown family for the last seven of those years, and were just noticing today how the jerseys show the growth of sponsorship and community outreach, from the time of the original until now.  Great work Hometown team!

A DYNAMIC DAD-SON DUO IN DAN & DONALD

Here’s another couple of exceptional Hometownies – a father-son duo – who embrace cycling for the joy it brings, the sportsmanship it inspires, and the bond it creates. Powered by the wonderful support of wife and mother, Vanessa, Dan and Donald Smith shared this awesome write-up on why they ride:

Riding bikes is second nature to [Dan and Donald].  For Dan, riding is more than just exercise.  He uses cycling as stress relief, a way to challenge himself, and also a way to travel to and explore new places with MMBA races. Most importantly, Dan rides to have fun with family and friends.  When Donald was asked why he rides, he did not know how to respond right away.  Riding is part of who he is as a person, he identifies himself as a biker rider.  When asked to dig deeper… he loves the feeling of going down a big hill, riding with his dad, using his Garmin to go faster each time he rides on the Blue and Yellow trails at Island Lake, and of course the cheering as he races by people… READ THEIR FULL STORY

COLIN & CYNTHIA FLIP CANCER THE BIRD

We loved the cheek and defiant artistry of The “Eff Cancer!” Ride, organized by clever Team members Colin and Cynthia Chisholm. They used approximately 25 miles to “stick it” to a disease that has touched so many, and wrapped up the evening with a grill out at their home. As Hometown Ride Coordinator Jean put it, “It was intense to feel the pain of riding and think it was nothing to those we know, love, and may have lost going through cancer.” Kudos on your creativity, Colin and Cynthia!

THE SHORT-INATORS: SARAH & JEFF’S BIG DAY

We count Sarah and Jeff among our most loyal Hometown and Jamis ambassadors – with a passion for both that warms us down to our bike clips. We’re so proud of their recent adventure, made possible by a remarkable dedication to training, healthfulness, and support of each other. You guys are an inspiration!

Jeffrey Short and I competed in the Shermanator Aquabike in Battle Creek, MI this morning. 500 meter swim, 10 mile bike. Beautiful day and Jeff and I both finished in the Women’s and Men’s Aquabike as overall champs!!! So proud. I won first place overall too!!! What a day! Hard work pays off. Next up Tawas Aquabike!!! Woot woot!

We’d also love to give a shout out to the cycling fanaticism of your very own Hometown Crew – from Jean Steinberg, who’s about to race Ore-to-Shore with one particularly awesome sister; to Meghan Terbush, who’s mountain biking the U.P. with her impressively adventurous family; to Evan Nelson, who’s cycling amongst palm trees down in Florida; to Chris Buddingh, who’s been bikepacking the past couple weeks with his lovely wife; to Joel Rushlow, who’s about to embark on a multi-day solo bike expedition across MI (stay tuned for his story in our next email!); to Hometown’s high school crew members, who are training for their first MISCA mountain bike race of the season!

What can we say? WE LOVE CYCLING!!

MEET YOUR CREW: EVAN NELSON

We thought we were well-versed in active people, but we seriously question whether Evan even sleeps – he’s involved in SO many things! He recently graduated from a high school career overflowing with DECA Club presidencies, school store management, crosswalk lobbying (ask him about this!), athletic endeavors, and even pie-making, just to name a few. We’ve been geeked to add “Hometown Events Associate” to his Renaissance-ian laundry list of skills and activities. Evan writes:

I strive to be active and started seriously riding bikes a few years ago. I love riding mountain bikes because of the challenges different terrain present.

I also enjoy kayaking, paddle boarding, hiking, running, and Scuba diving. Anything high energy and outdoors!
