Make your voice heard: Help stop distracted driving

League of Michigan Bicyclists

Distracted driving kills. Drivers’ odds of a crash more than doubled when they were texting. More than 3,000 traffic deaths in the U.S. in 2017 were caused by distracted driving. Yet Michigan’s texting-while-driving ban is hard to enforce and insufficient to change driver behavior. Hands-free laws are much simpler for police to enforce than texting or social media bans that leave loopholes for phone calls, and create less need for judgment calls.

A Team to Write Home-townies About

Team Hometown Bicycles Picnic 2018
LET ME TELL YOU WHAT YOUR TEAM DID…
Last weekend marked the first annual Team Picnic social, held at the beautiful Riverbend picnic area in Island Lake. Our Team gathered for an afternoon of cycling, potluck, grilling, socializing… and astonishing me and Shaun! With Bond-ian stealth, our Team coordinated a surprise 8th birthday gift for Hometown Bicycles – an emergency defibrillator wall unit – and presented it at the picnic. Thanks for the brilliant addition to our shop, Team – we’re feelin’ the love… and it’s mutual!Team Hometown Bicycles Picnic 2018
Key players: Team Social Sponsor, Sean Lowry of Lowry Solutions (top left), was the catalyst behind this event, and we were thrilled to meet his growing family. (Thanks again, Sean!) A Hometown favorite and long-standing, outstanding Service Lead Andrew (top middle) dropped by between grad parties to hang with his Hometownies. Grill masters Steve (bottom left) and Jim (bottom middle) were heroes to all of us hungry cyclists. Our awesome Ride Coordinator, Laura (bottom right), was mastermind and MC for this event. And a shout out goes to Hometown’s newest Events Coordinator and long-time Zumba queen, Leslie, for leaping in head first to set up one seriously successful picnic!

TEAM NEWS: HANSON HILLS, T-SHIRT RIDE & CYCLISTS GONE FISHIN’

Team Hometown Bicycles rider Linc Wehrly at Hanson Hills Mountain Bike RaceMissing the Team picnic in the line of duty (i.e. representing in the Hometown kit), our thanks and kudos goes to Linc Wehrly, who placed a respectable 5th at Hanson Hills Challenge Mountain Bike Race up in Grayling.

Team Hometown Bicycles rider Steve Wortley gone fishingTeam Co-Captain Jim Cleer toured Grand Ledge in his unmistakably Hometown apparel at the annual Tri-County Bicycle Association T-Shirt Ride.

And Steve Wortley did some lake-side promotion, wearing his Team gear for a recent fishing trip. Must have brought him some good luck, too, by the looks of it. Nice catch, Steve!

Thanks for spreading the love, Team!

HOMETOWN’S NON-HOSTILE MILFORD TAKE-OVER

Hometown shirts and jerseys were in abundance at last weekend’s MCMBA Milford Bike Fest & Trail Challenge. Attendees said our Team represented in the best possible way, with scores of Hometownie volunteers and riders exhibiting the best in helpfulness, sportsmanship, and personability. We couldn’t be prouder of all of you!We were geeked to be this year’s premier Bike Shop Sponsor, and sent our Milford connection – Service Manager Matt Fitzhorn – to offer SAG and swag. He captured a few photos (above), including a sea of cycles, the beginner group ride, and a cozy collection of event tents, where Matt got participants back in the saddle. A great turn-out for a great event – shout out to the MCMBA for our invite. We can’t wait to see what next year’s brings!

HAVE YOU SEEN OUR LIST OF WINTER EVENTS?
You know what’s fun – dropped jaws and double-takes because a Michigan bike shop parking lot is overflowing with cars throughout the winter!

We know you’re proud of how active your bike shop is – you tell us daily, and we appreciate that! But have you taken full advantage of the boredom-busting activity roster we’re rocking through the cold season (and beyond)? We’re doing this for you!

Of course, there are shop rides. But if snow cycling ain’t your thang, how about a fundraising concert? A wine-and-learn women’s night? An essential oils training? A fitness class? A bike clinic? A self defense course? Cuz they’re all happening here at Hometown, and that’s just over the next few weeks!

I challenge you to scroll down or visit our Facebook events page and PICK ONE (or more!) to attend. Maybe it peaks your interest, maybe you’ve never tried before, or maybe you simply need to get OUT – but go! We’re here to be a resource – let us be yours!!

ROLL & ROCK EVENT COMING 2/10
A ‘funk’y fundraiser for the Brighton High School Mountain Bike Team

***NOTE:  We’ve had a few questions regarding whether this event is kid-friendly. So, to clarify, the Roll & Rock is geared toward adults – later hours (7-10pm), classic jazz and blues tunage, BYOB (I suspect many will bring beer) – with proceeds supporting youth cycling. Consider it a date night with good karma!

On Saturday, February 10th, we’re clearing our floor of bikes for a LIVE CONCERT AT HOMETOWN, starring our very own CycloDan Tribble’s Progressive Blues & Rhythm Band. On the agenda – crazy awesome music, dancing, BYOB, snacks, socializing… and knowing that half of your $10 cover charge goes directly toward gearing up the BHS Team for their 2018 cycling season!

Enjoy the show from 7pm-9pm, then hang with the band at the after-party. It’s laid back, funky fun that will wow your ears and tickle your tastebuds, all while supporting youth cycling. Please let us know you’re coming, so we can plan for enough refreshments!

BAND BIO:  The Progressive Blues and Rhythm Band is Brian “BK Big Fish” King, drums, Doug “Bird Dog” Percha, guitar, Theo “Dr. Thee” Smith, bass and Dan Tribble aka “Shoocat Hopkins” on vocals and harmonica. All have been active members of the S.E. Michigan  music scene mostly dating back to the mid 70’s. The PBR Band intends to bring you a brew of blues, rock & funky R&B for  your listening and dancing enjoyment! Contact Brian at 330-806-1710 for booking info.

The 28th Annual SELCRA Daddy Daughter Dance flierOur community is so cool! Every year, SELCRA packs the Brighton High School with something like 1,500 dancing daddies and daughters. This Saturday, March 4th, count 4 more (me, Shaun, and the kids) as Hometown proudly sponsors this famous event.

Dads, grandpas, uncles, brothers – here’s a chance to give your mini-princess a night of dancing and fun! Doors open at 5:30. Tickets are $15. Dance. Dine. Bop ’til the balloons drop.

We’ll be parked next to our good friends from Brennan Investment Services in the cafeteria. Be sure to stop by our table and say “hi” – we’d love to meet your special little lady!

CONFESSIONS (& REVELATIONS) OF A SPIN NOVICE

Confession #1: I was nervous about going. Once upon a time, I was fit… post-kids, not so much.

Confession #2: I feared judgement. Everyone assumes the skinny girl’s an athlete. How was it going to look when I tapped out at granny speeds on the easiest spin bike setting?

Confession #3: I thought I might get bored. I mean, you’re indoors and stationary – how entertaining can that be?

Revelation #1: I left spin class reinvigorated, hopeful, motivated. Getting my legs moving got my brain moving, as well. It reminded me how it felt to be fit, and made me eager to get back to that “happy place” in my physical well-being.

Revelation #2: No one was looking. If I sat out a couple sprints or elected not to ramp up my resistance, there were no sirens and flashing “slacker alert!” signs over my head. Lights were dim, eyes were forward. It was between me, my mind, and my spin bike.

Revelation #3: Um… not even remotely. Instructor Tammy had us powering up and down, sprinting intervals, and leaping in and out of our saddles in an hour-long variety-fest of spin combinations. There literally wasn’t time to get bored!

THANK YOU to those awesome lady Hometownies who had my back at this class – you were the wind beneath my pedals! And thanks, too, to Hamburg Fitness Center‘s Deb and Terry, who cooked up this challenge to get my butt back in the saddle – this is the kind of remarkable support you can only expect from a gym that truly cares.

I hope my experience encourages on-the-fencers to give it a go… you don’t have to be Lance Armstrong, and you don’t have to be a member. Call for class times: 810-231-4169

MEET YOUR CREW: OZZY AGUILAR

Our to-the-point service tech, Ozzy, is easy-going but, man, can he rock out the tune-ups! You’ll spot him wrenching on bikes and riding the trails in between his school studies.

I ride because to me riding is a way to enjoy nature at its best. It’s a way to get away from people, the town, the city, and go into nature and enjoy the ride.

CRAMBA Ride Dirt Trails, Not Mud Trails flier

REMINDER: DON’T BE THAT CYCLIST

… you know, the eager beaver who just can’t wait for the trails to dry, and destroys them for everyone else. We know that early Spring days bring intense trail temptation, but listen to that little white-clad dude on your shoulder – the one with the halo! Or, if you’re more practical in nature, listen to the organizations that maintain the trails. Trust us, you’ll get a longer and more enjoyable cycling season when you sit tight for solid singletrack!
