Milford Bike Fest & Take a Kid Mountain Biking THIS WEEKEND!

Milford Bike Fest THIS SATURDAY!
Registration begins at 7 AM!
MCMBA brings you the Milford Bike Fest and Trail Challenge, an exciting day exploring the trails of Milford and enjoying live music at Main Street Grill & Tavern. This event is not a race; all skill levels are welcome!

Hometown will be on site for bike support, as well as leading a guided ride at 9 AM with Hometownie Tom Hermann. Back by popular demand, the Milford to Commerce Grand Tour traverses 30 miles of dirt roads, singletrack, two-track, and paved bike paths. It will be split into two groups; a spirited pace of 15 mph and a no-drop group ride at a pace of 10 mph.

Event proceeds will benefit future trail maintenance by the MCMBA.

Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day!
THIS SUNDAY, June 2 from 10 AM – 2 PM
Brighton Recreation Area, Sandhill Pavilion (Trailhead at Bishop Lake Parking Lot)

Poto MBA Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day is held to encourage communities to join together and get kids excited about riding our amazing trails. Let’s build passion for mountain biking!

The event is FREE for all ages to come have fun and bike on the two-mile beginner Appleton Lake Loop trail. Guided trail rides and a bike skills course will be available. Parents should plan on riding with their children. Please bring your own bikes, helmets and appropriate footwear.

Hometown Bicycles will be assisting with free bicycle and helmet checks. We’re excited to have a fantastic day with you and your kids!

JAMIS DEMO DAY WAS BEYOND COOL!

Jamis Bikes and Hometown Bicycles are a formidable team!
On Thursday 5/23, Hometown teamed up with Jamis to co-host an awesomely fun Demo Day at Island Lake State Recreation Area. It was a gorgeous, sunny day for the latest 3VO Suspension bikes to be on site! We were nonstop with demos, totaling about 30 riders… and everyone was impressed with this new, exciting bike technology!

Brighton Optimist Club Bike Decorating Contest and Parade – Thurs., July 4 at 8 AM

Decorate your bike at home, or bring your bike and decorations to Hometown between Saturday 6/29 and Wednesday 7/3. You can bring your bike with you on the 4th of July, or decorate it and leave it at our shop to be delivered for you to the contest site on the 4th! Judging starts at 9:15 AM with awards immediately following. And then it’s Parade time at 10 AM!

The elephant in the room, Ladies Night Out countdown, and we smell chili in the air…

Many of you are familiar with the newly installed trade tariffs that are already shaking the cycling industry, which imports much of its products – bikes, parts, and accessories – from overseas. We’re seeing the repercussions deluge down from the manufacturers, to the suppliers, to us local dealers. Last Monday, Jamis instituted a 10% tariff-induced increase across the board… and they’re just one of thousands forced to do the same.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU? We have always been and will always be a service-focused bicycle shop – with a mission of making our value always exceed our price – but we do understand that our customers rely on us to also offer bicycles, parts, and accessories. Prices on these will necessarily be impacted industry-wide, and that includes here at Hometown.

We’ll continue to make decisions that help us provide you with the best value at the best price. In the meantime, we so appreciate your support and understanding. Bear with us – there continue to be exciting things afoot here at Hometown (there always are!), and we won’t let a tariff interfere with the important work we’re doing for you!

Brighton Optimist Club honors Hometown!

We couldn’t be more proud to have received an invitation to the Brighton Optimist ClubPresident’s Dinner and Annual Banquet on September 27th. Hometown Bicycles was awarded for our participation in the Brighton 4th of July Parade and Bike Decorating Contest. Over the years, we have helped the Optimist Club’s presence in the parade grow from one entrant to, this year, a whopping 50 children and parents riding their bikes down Main Street in the best parade around!

Tour De Livingston 2018: What a stellar October day!

Wow, what a Hometown-pride-filled day of awesomeness at last weekend’s sensational Tour de Livingston!

Our Team was sure representin’ at this must-ride event of October and top notch Howell Rotary fundraiser for Livingston County United Way. We are so proud of you for your efforts, your positive attitudes and your overall spirit and soul as you trekked up to 100 miles to support a great cause!

Hometown gave away a beautiful Jamis Renegade, there were smiles galore, and if you take a close look at the top left photo, you may even see a Shaun on a Stick… they were everywhere!

Thank you, HOWELL ROTARY & LIVINGSTON COUNTY UNITED WAY, for another chance to support our Community through cycling!

Team News: Settlers Park Trail Cleanup and Michigan Mountain Mayhem!Thanks to everyone who came out to help work on the new Settlers Park mountain bike trail! A whole slew of volunteers, led by Tom Hermann, gathered on September 29th to beautify and make improvements to the trail located behind Meijer in Hartland.

Team members Mike Dyer, Les Cook, Jim Thompson, Keith Cowgar, Laura Faunce and Scooter Gates put their backs into it alongside Tom. They were also joined by Gage Thompson, Dan Whitman, Matt Mascot, and Elliott Klein and his family.

The Pathways at Settlers Park consist of a paved 1.2-mile loop and a brand new 2-mile mountain bike path. The Motor City Mountain Biking Association (MCMBA) installed the bike path, which is open to two-way, non-motorized traffic.

In other team news, congratulations to Brad Allen and Erik Frazier for competing in the 60-mile Michigan Mountain Mayhem Gravel Road Race at Rotary Park in Boyne City on September 29th. The race is described as “sadistic”, if that tells you anything! Five monster climbs, lots of fast gravel roads, multiple sections of tough seasonal roads which have sand, mud and rocks, plus a white knuckle descent. Whew!

Then, Mike Dyer and Jim Thompson were muddy buddies at Custer’s Last Stand Against Human Trafficking MTB Race in Augusta, MI on Oct. 6th, rocking 2nd and 3rd respectively in their age groups. Way to take a stand, guys!

Hometown on Parade and a 42-Bike Salute

PROOF POSITIVE THAT OPTIMISM REALLY DOES PAY OFF…
We were POSITIVE that we could help the Brighton Optimist Club top last year’s participation numbers in their annual Fourth of July Bike Decorating Contest & Parade Ride, and boy did we ever!! Nearly 50 participants packed the roadway in this year’s parade, up from a little over 10 last year!

Brighton Optimist Club, by the way, has been dedicated to “Bringing out the best in children” since 1977. We are honored that they chose Hometown to help make this the best year ever – thank you, Brighton Optimists!! And thanks to ALL of you who came out in support of their worthy mission – Shaun and I loved riding with you, and can’t wait to do it again next year!!

(To point out a few highlights: You probably already recognize the fuzzy guy and his family in the upper left; directly below left is Brighton Optimist Club President Gary London, who’s had faith in Hometown since Day One!; in the middle is Kurt and his beautiful family, who had such a great time that they’re already planning for next year!; and bottom right is Hometown’s own Amy Gluck and Team rider Joe Van Gorden leading up the bicycles with the Brighton Optimist Club banner!

A 42-KIDS-BIKE BUILD-A-THON WITH LAKE TRUST

When we find fellow businesses whose values align with our own, it’s a thrill and joy to forge partnerships that span industries and grow year by year. We’ve enjoyed that sort of relationship with Lake Trust Credit Union – a company founded on community-centeredness – first as customers, then as partners in charity.

Lake Trust recently tapped on Hometown for a commendable corporate Build-a-Bike program. With Hometown’s help, their team built up 42 Jamis kids bikes, which were then donated to 16 amazing organizations, including LACASA, Make A Wish Foundation of MI and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Livingston. TEAM NEWS: In the thick of summer cycling…

Our Team has been busy, busy, busy with rides and races across the State! Above, you’re seeing Team rockstar, Ellen Geddie, who road 46 miles of Blue Water Ramble in the rain!!

Jim Cleer and John Wyatt got down to business at the MSU Gran Fondo, which is known as 80 miles of “rolling party”, with music, food, and brews along the way!

Team bike goddesses, Amy Daybird, Sarah Dudley-Short, and Deanna Swan made a powerhouse trio at the 10th Anniversary Tri Goddess Tri, the first ever all-women’s triathlon/duathlon.

And 12 Team riders hit the trails at the Island Lake Challenge Mountain Bike Race – a Yellow Loop fiesta of dirt track and determination. Shout out to Brad Allen, Leslie Cook, Cammie Coffey, Keith Cowger, Mike Dyer, Jay Mings, Kasandra Noel, Brien TerBush, Jim Thompson, Link Wehrly, Steve Wortley and Kevin Machuga. Brad killed it with a 1st in Open Sport Fat Bike, and Keith dominated with a 1st in his age division for Sport!

This year, Hometown’s headed downtown July 13th & 14th (with July Jubilee on the 15th!) for the annual A Taste of Brighton affair, where we’ll give festival-goers a flavor of what makes our shop and our sport so darn special! Shaun will be on stage running several Bike Care 101 and Flat Tire Fix clinics throughout the event, and our tent will be crankin’, with our Service Crew demo-ing what we’re famous for – the best bike repair in Southeast Michigan! Join your Hometown Crew for our beginner-friendly mountain bike trail ride, which encourages riders to explore new trails as their skill level increases. Ride with your Hometown bike guru, CycloDan Tribble! Front and rear light required, as we end at dusk. This ride weaves through and around Island Lake, covering 13+ miles of pavement, dirt trails and gravel roads (a few hills just for fun!) at an average 12-13 mph. Expect a “puddle” or two of sand and a few face slappers on the trails this time of year. Nothing our gravel, adventure or mountain/fat bikes can’t easily handle. KIDS LEARN SAFE CYCLING WITH HOMETOWN BICYCLES

Last week kicked off the 2018 Brighton Safety Town kids training series located at Hilton Elementary School. It’s an event we look forward to every year! Shaun trots out the Hometown-mobile and traffic cones for a Hometown-style kiddie clinic in bike checks, helmet fit, and cycling safety. Nearly 30 children attended this year’s event! A and B groups will average 10-15+ mph. Road bikes only! Please have some experience on your bike, along with basic shifting and braking skills for the safety of the group. Come enjoy beautiful, HILLY country roads and wonderful ride company. Expect several TOUGH, LONG CLIMBS, at an average 14 – 15 MPH pace for all 28.2 miles. The group may split into 2, with the front pack averaging > 15 mph. (Check out Dan’s Gravel Grinding 101 ride for a less grueling option.) Cross/Gravel, Mountain and Fat bikes are welcome. Sunday Exploring Trails Mountain Bike Ride

SUNDAY, JULY 1 | 4:30PM (MEET BY 4:15PM) | FROM HOMETOWN
Join your Hometown Crew for our beginner-friendly mountain bike trail ride, which encourages riders to explore new trails as their skill level increases. This week, we’ll enjoy 9 – 15 miles of Island Lake single track over the course of 1.5 hours. All levels welcome – NO DROP RIDE. Mountain and Fat Bikes are encouraged. Riders under 15 must remain with their guardian throughout the ride. Be mindful that the trail has several hills and some minimum level of fitness will be helpful to make for a positive experience.
